FROM Barbie to A Star is Born, some of the greatest songs from musical movies will take centre stage at the Show Choir’s debut concert this month.<\/p>\n
The group was founded by Show Choir director Rachel Sinclair, from SongFusion, who was inspired by a love for musicals.<\/p>\n
“While we’re fortunate to have many excellent choirs in the region, I saw an opportunity for a group that focused on popular, upbeat and accessible repertoire, and I knew that would be the kind of ensemble I’d love to lead,” she said.<\/p>\n
“Musicals bring stories to life in a way that speaks straight to the heart. They don’t rely solely on rational storytelling or dialogue to convey meaning \u2014 they use music, movement and emotion to create a direct, visceral connection with the audience.<\/p>\n
“Instead of explaining a character’s feelings through words alone, a musical might launch into a song that feels like heartbreak, joy or longing. That emotional immediacy can make the story more powerful and memorable.<\/p>\n
“For example, Defying Gravity in Wicked doesn’t just say Elphaba is breaking free \u2014 it sounds like liberation. Shallow in A Star Is Born captures the vulnerability and intensity of a relationship unravelling, without needing a single line of explanation.<\/p>\n
“We’ll add a couple of new songs for our second concert in November, and next year we’re planning a Disney-themed show.”<\/p>\n
Originally from Western Australia, Sinclair has lived in the Northern Rivers for around a decade. She has sung with various local choirs, performed with chamber choir Vox Caldera in two NORPA productions and served on the organising committee for events like the Big Sing with Byron Music Society.<\/p>\n
She said the group was excited to present its first performance, which will also include songs from Wicked and Rent.<\/p>\n
“For many of our members, it’s their first time performing in a group like this,” she said. “We can’t wait to share what we’ve created.”<\/p>\n
The choir rehearses fortnightly on Saturday afternoons at St John the Baptist Church Hall in Lennox Head and welcomes new members.<\/p>\n
