NEW managers Clayton and Kendall Fettell plan to rebuild swimming programs and upgrade facilities after taking over the Ballina War Memorial Pool.<\/p>\n
The couple has taken on the role with future plans including a new caf\u00e9 and infrastructure improvements over time.<\/p>\n
Clayton, 39, grew up in the industry, with his parents Greg and Kelly Fettell running the Alstonville pool since 1994.<\/p>\n
He is one of four children who worked at the pool as a teenager before travelling the world as a professional triathlete.<\/p>\n
Fettell now has three children of his own with his wife Kendall and takes on the job after running a successful online training business in endurance sports, swimming and triathlon.<\/p>\n
“My kids are at a similar age now from when my parents moved here and I want to give them the same kind of upbringing,” Clayton said.<\/p>\n
“It’s a big job, I’m lucky to have Kendall looking after operations while we look to build the learn to swim programs, squad training and water polo.<\/p>\n
“We’ve enjoyed it so far, there is a really healthy swimming community already here and we just want to keep building on that.”<\/p>\n
Previous managers Vicki and Lee Fitzgerald finished earlier this year after 31 years at the pool.<\/p>\n
Fettell has spent years in management and coaching roles at the Alstonville pool and expects a big summer ahead.<\/p>\n
“Last January there was between 25,000\u201330,000 people who came through the gates here,” Fettell said.<\/p>\n
“It’s a lot of people, and it’s hard work, but it’s what I know and what I’ve grown up with.<\/p>\n
“We’ve got about 25 staff and we’re looking forward to what’s to come.”<\/p>\n
The couple has launched Swim Co, a structured squad program for swimmers of all levels \u2014 from young beginners to competitive athletes and adults looking to stay fit.<\/p>\n
Masters training groups will also run during the day.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
