{"id":110373,"date":"2025-10-07T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-10-06T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballinatimes\/?p=110373"},"modified":"2025-10-01T22:16:13","modified_gmt":"2025-10-01T12:16:13","slug":"research-program-to-help-turtles-overcome-disease","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballinatimes\/news\/research-program-to-help-turtles-overcome-disease\/","title":{"rendered":"Research program to help turtles overcome disease"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MARINE biologist Amanda Philp will be part of groundbreaking research into a viral tumour disease in green sea turtles after receiving a prestigious Churchill Fellowship.<\/p>\n<p>She was one of two recipients from the Southern Cross University along with Matt Nolan, who is exploring how salt-tolerant plants can help farming in a changing climate.<\/p>\n<p>Philp is the head biologist at the Australian Seabird and Turtle Rescue at Ballina.<\/p>\n<p>Her research is focused on a viral tumour disease that can impact a sea turtle&#8217;s ability to swim, see, feed, and survive in the wild along with its rehabilitation<\/p>\n<p>She will visit leading rehabilitation facilities in the United States, the Maldives, and the Bahamas to study quarantine design, surgical tumour removal, and post-operative care.<\/p>\n<p>Her goal is to adapt global best practice for Australian conditions, reducing euthanasia rates and giving more turtles the chance to return to the ocean.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m very excited to be a Churchill Fellow to pursue a solution to this horrible tumour disease affecting our green sea turtles,&#8221; Philp said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am committed to advancing marine turtle conservation by sharing findings with rehabilitators, veterinarians, and environmental groups nationwide, ensuring that Australia&#8217;s endangered turtles have the best possible chance of survival for generations to come.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Nolan is doing his PhD at the Lismore campus and will continue his work when he travels the Middle East, Europe, South America, and Southeast Asia to learn innovative methods for cultivating resilient plants and to explore the potential of saline agriculture.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 601px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2025\/10\/MattHolanheadshot_20483.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"601\" height=\"481\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Matt Nolan is researching how salt-tolerant plants can help farming in a changing climate.
