{"id":110596,"date":"2025-10-17T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-10-16T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballinatimes\/?p=110596"},"modified":"2025-10-15T17:54:40","modified_gmt":"2025-10-15T06:54:40","slug":"ballina-public-school-crowned-joint-rugby-league-champions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballinatimes\/sport\/ballina-public-school-crowned-joint-rugby-league-champions\/","title":{"rendered":"Ballina Public School crowned joint rugby league champions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BALLINA Public School was crowned joint state rugby league champion after taking on Mount Terry in the NSW Primary School Sports Association Classic Shield grand final at Cessnock.<\/p>\n<p>The teams shared the title after they were locked at six-all following the 40-minute final.<\/p>\n<p>It was a major result for Ballina Public which fielded one of the strongest rugby league teams to come out of the school in the last 25 years.<\/p>\n<p>Mary Cameron coached the team, which was littered with talent across the squad of 20 and is also the school sports coordinator.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s huge for us; I&#8217;ve been the sport coordinator for 18 years and we haven&#8217;t had a team go to state for anything,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have some standout players and they all shone at different times, which really helped the team.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The whole team excelled with their communication, skill and sportsmanship. Without that you&#8217;re not going to have a successful team.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_117689\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-117689\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-117689\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2025\/10\/IMG_1073_81708.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-117689\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Ballina Public School rugby league team. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Five-eighth Tyrone Kelly, lock Ava Roberts and second-rower Aseli Mamata-Cook played well throughout the campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Individually, Tyrone has been part of a state team and is the nephew of Gold Coast Titans NRL player Brian Kelly.<\/p>\n<p>The team was undefeated after winning four games at the local gala day and continued to impress on its way to the final<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There were a few family connections throughout the team and the whole school stopped to watch the grand final game on livestream,&#8221; Cameron said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We had a short turnaround of only 10 days after playing at Port Macquarie.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We were lucky to have an amazing group of parents who came on board with fundraising efforts to help us get [to Cessnock].&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BALLINA Public School was crowned joint state rugby league champion after taking on Mount Terry in the NSW Primary School Sports Association Classic Shield grand final at Cessnock.
