A RED alert warning for high levels of potentially toxic blue-green algae has been issued at Lake Ainsworth with people told to stay out of the water until further notice.<\/p>\n

The alert was issued by WaterNSW after sampling was conducted by Ballina Shire Council.<\/p>\n

Blue green algae is photosynthetic bacteria that lives in the water, it produces toxins that can pose a risk to livestock and cause health issues for humans.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Red Alert warning applies only to untreated water at the identified location and will remain in place until monitoring confirms that the risk is sufficiently diminished,\u201d a council spokesperson said.<\/p>\n

\u201cPotentially toxic blue-green algae may cause gastroenteritis if consumed, while contact can cause skin and eye irritations.<\/p>\n

\u201cConsumption of water containing algal toxins may cause liver damage and other health problems.<\/p>\n

People should avoid recreational activities such as swimming, water skiing, canoeing and any other activity that brings them into contact with this water body until the red alert warning is lifted.<\/p>\n

Anyone who suspects they have been affected by blue-green algae should seek medical advice.<\/p>\n

Fishing in the area should also be avoided to minimise risks.<\/p>\n

Blue -green algae are naturally occurring and can reproduce quickly in still or slow-flowing water when there is abundant sunlight and sufficient nutrients<\/p>\n
