A MOBILE breast screening van has returned to Ballina with free support services available for women over the next three months.<\/p>\n

The van will be parked at Fawcett Park until the end of January.<\/p>\n

It has been an annual service in recent years, based on Ballina having an ageing population and being identified as an at-risk region.<\/p>\n

Director of BreastScreen NSW North Coast Patrick Magee said a regular breast screen is one of the most important things women can do for their health.<\/p>\n

“Detecting breast cancer early increases your chance of survival while reducing the likelihood of invasive treatment, such as mastectomy or chemotherapy,” he said.<\/p>\n

“Around 90 per cent of women diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history.<\/p>\n

“This is why breast cancer screening is so important for all eligible women.”<\/p>\n

The program provides mobile screening services in areas where access to fixed clinics is limited.<\/p>\n

It has onsite radiographers who collaborate with Healthy North Coast and the Bullinah Aboriginal Health Service.<\/p>\n

Women aged 50 to 74 are encouraged to screen every two years. The appointments are free and no doctor’s referral is needed.<\/p>\n

Magee said having a mobile van makes it easier for women to attend their recommended two-yearly screening.<\/p>\n

“Bringing these vital services to Ballina means more local women can be screened,” he said.<\/p>\n

“Life gets busy and we want women to make their health a priority.”<\/p>\n

Women with a family history of breast cancer should discuss their specific needs with their GP.<\/p>\n

The van is equipped with a lift system to support women with health conditions or disabilities.<\/p>\n
