{"id":111966,"date":"2025-12-17T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-12-16T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballinatimes\/?p=111966"},"modified":"2025-12-10T18:24:18","modified_gmt":"2025-12-10T07:24:18","slug":"new-event-highlights-creativity-and-skills-in-disabled-community","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballinatimes\/news\/new-event-highlights-creativity-and-skills-in-disabled-community\/","title":{"rendered":"New event highlights creativity and skills in disabled community"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A NEW community event celebrating inclusion and the talents of people with disabilities has attracted about 250 people to Cherry Street Sports Club in Ballina.<\/p>\n<p>Held in conjunction with the International Day of People with a Disability, the gathering filled a gap in the Northern Rivers.<\/p>\n<p>The event was coordinated by Jo McIntyre from Auscare Support, who said the aim was to showcase the creativity, entrepreneurship and contributions of people with disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There wasn&#8217;t anything else really happening in the region when we started our planning,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We really wanted to focus on what inclusion looks like in the community.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People with disabilities contribute with their own art, micro businesses and hobbies which they can turn into income.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The stalls included T-shirts, candle making, woodwork and hand-crafted pieces of jewellery.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2025\/12\/W9A1943_37549.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The day highlighted a range of arts and crafts made by people from across the region. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The international theme for the day this year focused on advanced social progression.<\/p>\n<p>It aims to remove barriers and ensure equal opportunities for people with disabilities in health and education to community participation.<\/p>\n<p>The Ballina event also included a range of activities with basket weaving, Lego challenges, live music and games.<\/p>\n<p>Plans are already in place for it to become an annual event, with the focus on the whole region.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We already had people travel from Byron Bay, Lismore and Tweed and I&#8217;m sure it will only get bigger,&#8221; McIntyre said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Cherry Street Sports were really supportive; it brought everyone together in the same space and we were all part of it as one big group.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There is every chance it could be become a signature event for the region.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A NEW community event celebrating inclusion and the talents of people with disabilities has attracted about 250 people to Cherry Street Sports Club in Ballina.
