NORTH Coast Local Land Services has warned farmers to be prepared for markets and meatworks to be closed over the Christmas period.<\/p>\n
Livestock producers need to ensure they have sufficient feed on hand with grass in the paddock and hay in the sheds.<\/p>\n
Local Land Services animal and biosecurity welfare manager Lyndell Stone said it was important to keep animals in a healthy condition until markers reopen in the new year.<\/p>\n
\u201cNow is a good time to bring stock into the yards, condition score them and draft off any animals suitable for sale, either via the saleyards or direct to a processor before the abattoirs close for the holidays,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWater supplies are also an important issue to consider as the summer weather warms up.<\/p>\n
\u201cMake sure bores and troughs are working well and if dams are likely to dry up, start planning now on moving stock to paddocks with a secure water source.\u201d<\/p>\n
Livestock increase water consumption significantly in warm weather.<\/p>\n
During summer, landholders should look out for signs of heat stress in their animals, including open mouth breathing, shallow and rapid breathing, shade seeking, reduced feed intake and increased water intake.<\/p>\n
Not providing proper care can lead to death in extreme cases, particularly during heatwaves with more rain not predicted until February.<\/p>\n
Livestock should be moved during early morning or late afternoon when temperatures are cooler.<\/p>\n
