{"id":112606,"date":"2026-01-11T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-10T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballinatimes\/?p=112606"},"modified":"2026-01-07T22:32:16","modified_gmt":"2026-01-07T11:32:16","slug":"inside-byron-bays-surprising-interactive-art-experience","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballinatimes\/news\/inside-byron-bays-surprising-interactive-art-experience\/","title":{"rendered":"Inside Byron Bay\u2019s surprising interactive art experience"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE newly revamped interactive art gallery HAVEN has been wowing locals and visitors alike over the summer holidays, offering immersive experiences ranging from a 360-degree film to a room that takes visitors to another planet.<\/p>\n<p>Formerly known as OTHERWORLD, the space features 19 exhibitions by local and international multidisciplinary artists, designed to encourage people of all ages to play, explore and engage. Installations include a sound-making cloud room and an interactive experience featuring Indigenous artwork.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition Mars, by local artist Oliver Buckworth, was constructed almost entirely from recycled and upcycled materials to create an otherworldly landscape.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/01\/Childreninteractingw_03600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Children interacting with one of the light exhibits at HAVEN Gallery.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>At the heart of the gallery, housed in the former Woolworths building, sits a large dome screening a 45-minute 360-degree film experience titled Carriberrie. The film features Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander dancers performing across diverse Australian landscapes.<\/p>\n<p>The exterior of the dome is illuminated by a light show inspired by the movement of sea anemones<\/p>\n<p>Curator Mimi Stein said HAVEN provides a rare community space where adults and children can come together to be curious and creative.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/01\/Awomanwalkingpastthe_03636.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"337\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A sea anemone\u2013inspired light show ripples across the exterior of the dome.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I love galleries, but some can make me feel like I don&#8217;t even know how to move my elbow within the bright light room,&#8221; she said. &#8220;At HAVEN you can move freely through the gallery without polish or glare, like a night walk for glow worms.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Stein had recently returned to Australia from Berlin, where she had been working with artist Fee-Gloria Groenemeyer, when the opportunity to work at HAVEN arose.<\/p>\n<p>She said she has loved collaborating with artists including Amarina Toby, Chris Daly and Elodie Gervaise, bringing together people from diverse creative fields.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/01\/Avisitorinteractingw_03662.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Adults and children are encouraged to play at HAVEN Gallery.
