ROB Rhodes is a child of the ’80s. But he grew up listening to his parents’ record collection, packed with albums from the ’70s.<\/p>\n

“When I was learning to play guitar it was all that stuff that was an influence on me,” he says.<\/p>\n

That passion for the era has never faded. Rhodes regularly performs with his band, Living in the 70s, at venues across the Northern Rivers, including Shaws Bay Hotel, Lennox Hotel and Hotel Brunswick.<\/p>\n

The Pottsville local, who also serves as lead vocalist, is joined by Justin Bannister from Alstonville on keyboards and vocals, Charles Longey from Brunswick Heads on bass guitar, and Darren Jackson from Angourie, south of Yamba, on drums.<\/p>\n

The group will celebrate its 10-year anniversary in February.<\/p>\n

“I did some fill-ins for a band called Late for Woodstock and it formed out of that,” Rhodes said. “They do a lot more late ’60s stuff, but we concentrate on the ’70s.<\/p>\n

“It began more as a classic rock band but it’s now more of a party dance band. We’ve evolved to play a bit more disco and fun rock and roll. We just found our audience like to dance and have a good time so we evolved the band more into that party vibe instead of just hard classic rock.”<\/p>\n

Their repertoire includes covers by artists such as Status Quo, Dragon and Daddy Cool, and a single set might move from a Neil Diamond acoustic track to a disco hit.<\/p>\n

“It’s never boring, we don’t lean into one artist or genre,” Rhodes said.<\/p>\n

Crowd favourites include ABBA’s Ring Ring and Ted Mulry’s Jump in My Car.<\/p>\n

“It’s a song you can have a lot of fun with,” Rhodes said. “Justin will sing the falsetto part and it’s equal parts entertaining and funny.”<\/p>\n

Living in the 70s will perform at Wharf River Club outside Wharf Bar and Restaurant Ballina on Sunday, February 1.<\/p>\n
