KIDS’ birthday parties in Byron Shire are set to become cheaper and more environmentally friendly, with Council now offering loans of reusable party kits.<\/p>\n
The kits include a set of 12 brightly coloured plates, cups, bowls and cutlery made from recycled plastic. Brunswick Heads business Possum-bilities has also contributed bright bunting made from repurposed, second-hand fabrics for use as decorations.<\/p>\n
The kits can be booked via a form on Council’s website, collected from the Council office in Mullumbimby. They must be returned clean within seven days.<\/p>\n
“These party kits look amazing, and I really hope that parents get behind this initiative as a way of reducing single-use waste,” Byron Shire mayor Sarah Ndiaye said.<\/p>\n
“It also makes so much sense to borrow a party kit rather than having to store partyware away for 12 months until the next birthday rolls around.<\/p>\n
“These sets are beautiful, free to borrow and can be used over and over.”<\/p>\n
Council’s litter and illegal dumping prevention officer Anika Brown said the initiative aims to highlight where single-use waste is commonly generated, with children’s parties often producing large amounts of disposable plates, cups, serviettes, plastic wrapping and decorations.<\/p>\n
The project is a joint initiative between Council and North East Waste.<\/p>\n
In 2024, Byron Shire Council banned balloons and other single-use party items \u2014 including confetti, glitter, streamers and glow sticks \u2014 from all council buildings, parks and managed land to protect wildlife and the environment from plastic pollution.<\/p>\n
The ban applies to all types, including biodegradable and latex balloons, and is intended to encourage reusable alternatives.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
