{"id":112895,"date":"2026-01-29T13:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-29T02:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballinatimes\/?p=112895"},"modified":"2026-01-28T20:17:49","modified_gmt":"2026-01-28T09:17:49","slug":"childrens-health-advocate-rebekka-battista-named-citizen-of-the-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballinatimes\/news\/childrens-health-advocate-rebekka-battista-named-citizen-of-the-year\/","title":{"rendered":"Children&#8217;s health advocate Rebekka Battista named Citizen of the Year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CHILDREN&#8217;S health advocate Rebekka Battista has been named Lismore Citizen of the Year, after dedicating more than two decades of fundraising efforts to help deliver millions to paediatric care across the Northern Rivers.<\/p>\n<p>The Our Kids fundraiser coordinator has played a pivotal role in strengthening regional children&#8217;s health services, working with Our Kids and Our House to ensure local hospitals are equipped to deliver high-quality care.<\/p>\n<p>Her connection to Our Kids began in 2001 following the birth of her son Isaak, who was born with renal failure and later required a kidney transplant with Rebekka becoming his donor.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, she has been a driving force behind fundraising efforts, helping raise more than $2.5 million for paediatric equipment at Lismore Base Hospital, Grafton Base Hospital and the Tweed Hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Battista was on holiday during the long weekend, with the award accepted on her behalf by her mother, Marcia Skaines, at a ceremony held at Southern Cross University.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_121701\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-121701\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-121701\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/01\/621810509_1284307790_70891.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"480\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-121701\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The award winners at the Lismore City Council Australia Day awards at Southern Cross University. Photos: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I love what I do, I see the best of our community working together to make a difference to so many families,&#8221; Battista said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I see my work as a team effort, and I love working with you all.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Local fundraising events have seen more than $2.5 million invested by the charity to help children access care closer to home.<\/p>\n<p>The annual Winter Ball in Lismore alone has raised more than $200,000 since it began nearly 20 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Lismore mayor Steve Krieg congratulated Battista on the honour.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I thank her for the care, resilience and commitment she has shown to improving children&#8217;s health and family support across our region,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_121702\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-121702\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-121702\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/01\/4d0784c9-7b55-46f9-8_72970.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"750\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-121702\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lismore mayor Steve Krieg presents the major award to Marcia Skaines on behalf of her daughter Rebekka Battista.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I also want to acknowledge all winners and nominees across the categories. Each of them is proof that community does not just happen \u2014 it is built by people who show up.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Other award winners included Charlie Murray (Young Citizen of the Year), Bruce Sheaffe (Services in the Community), Rainbow Roos (Services to the Community), Cooper Williams and Connor McCarthy (Sportsperson), Marist Brothers rugby league (Sports Team), Ina Engermann (Environment), Jacklyn Wagner (Arts and Culture), Felicity Hyde (Economic Excellence) and Dr Chris Ingall (Academic Excellence).<\/p>\n<p>The ceremony also welcomed 52 new citizens, including 12 dependants.<\/p>\n<p>New Australians came from 20 countries, including Germany, New Zealand, Nigeria, the Philippines, China, Nepal, the United Kingdom, South Africa, Spain, Vietnam, Kenya and Papua New Guinea.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CHILDREN&#8217;S health advocate Rebekka Battista has been named Lismore Citizen of the Year, after dedicating more than two decades of fundraising efforts to help deliver millions to paediatric care across the Northern Rivers.
