{"id":113207,"date":"2026-02-14T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-02-13T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballinatimes\/?p=113207"},"modified":"2026-02-11T20:21:22","modified_gmt":"2026-02-11T09:21:22","slug":"shores-uniteds-focus-on-junior-development-at-summer-sixes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballinatimes\/sport\/shores-uniteds-focus-on-junior-development-at-summer-sixes\/","title":{"rendered":"Shores United&#8217;s focus on junior development at Summer Sixes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SHORES United Soccer Club is hosting its Summer Sixes youth competition, giving young players more time on the ball to develop skills ahead of the Far North Coast junior season.<\/p>\n<p>The Friday-night competition is held at Shara Field and is open to players aged 10 to 13, who compete in six-a-side mixed teams.<\/p>\n<p>Now in its second year, the Summer Sixes competition has attracted clubs from across the Byron Shire and beyond, offering a unique format not seen elsewhere in the region.<\/p>\n<p>Teams are graded over the first five weeks before being split into new divisions, ensuring evenly matched contests heading into finals at the end of the school term.<\/p>\n<p>Junior coordinator Dan Engel said the format was designed to keep games competitive and enjoyable.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s the only real competition of its kind in the area that uses this kind of format,&#8221; Engel said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_122221\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-122221\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-122221\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/02\/Image-12_93843.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-122221\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The focus is on fun and junior development at the sixes competition.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The last few weeks are a lot of fun, and the scores reflect how even and fair it is after a few weeks of grading.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Kids lose interest if it&#8217;s not balanced, so we run it where if there&#8217;s a three-goal difference the trailing team can add an extra player or the opposition takes someone off.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The competition is run by volunteers, with Shores United raising enough funds over the past two years to purchase the equipment needed to launch the Sixes format.<\/p>\n<p>Up to 16 teams can take part, with sides already travelling from Pottsville and Uki to be involved.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Far North Coast junior competition doesn&#8217;t start until a bit later this year, so this is a good chance for kids to come out and have a kick in the pre-season,&#8221; Engel said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Everyone is welcome.
