{"id":113354,"date":"2026-02-23T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-02-22T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballinatimes\/?p=113354"},"modified":"2026-02-18T20:40:26","modified_gmt":"2026-02-18T09:40:26","slug":"new-academy-program-to-support-young-indigenous-men-at-ballina-coast-high","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballinatimes\/news\/new-academy-program-to-support-young-indigenous-men-at-ballina-coast-high\/","title":{"rendered":"New academy program to support young Indigenous men at Ballina Coast High"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BALLINA Coast High School has launched a new Young Men&#8217;s Academy aimed at supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students through a 12-month education and mentoring program.<\/p>\n<p>The program is run by the National Aboriginal Sporting Chance Academy and follows the success of the school&#8217;s existing Young Women&#8217;s Academy.<\/p>\n<p>Up to 50 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander boys will take part in the academy, which focuses on improving school engagement, building cultural identity and supporting future education and employment pathways.<\/p>\n<p>The academy provides ongoing support including transport, in-class assistance and extracurricular activities centred on culture, education and community connection.<\/p>\n<p>Project director Blake Borgia said students would take part in weekly workshops covering culture, health, wellbeing and confidence.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Each week, students participate in national workshops covering culture, health, wellbeing and confidence, and they also attend larger-scale events where they meet peers from other academies across New South Wales,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The boys&#8217; academy starts with 50 students, supported by two dedicated staff, and we plan to expand as enrolments grow.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/02\/IMG_2167_02295.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"496\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">LEFT: Some of the boys in the group performed traditional dances at the launch. Photo: MITCHELL CRAIG.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The school&#8217;s involvement is critical; the program only works because we have strong partnerships with the school and its staff.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Students, staff and parents attended the official launch at the school, which included traditional dance and music performances supported by mentors.<\/p>\n<p>The program also includes a pathway component for older students, linking them with post-school opportunities in education, employment and community life.<\/p>\n<p>Borgia said the girls&#8217; academy at the school had already delivered strong outcomes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve seen graduation rates of 93 to 95 per cent over the last few years,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve also seen female suspensions drop by 66 per cent at Ballina Coast High, and we&#8217;re looking to provide the same level of support for the boys.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BALLINA Coast High School has launched a new Young Men&#8217;s Academy aimed at supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students through a 12-month education and mentoring program.
