IT was a moment that could have ended their lives. Roger and Ralph Kabalan had just driven past the Port of Beirut when the 2020 explosion \u2013 which killed nearly 200 people and injured more than 10,000 \u2013 tore through the city’s trade hub. Considered one of the largest non-nuclear explosions in history, the blast was caused by the detonation of about 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate, a highly explosive chemical that had been improperly stored in a warehouse at the port for years.<\/p>\n

“We watched the chaos unfold behind us,” Roger said. “If we had been slightly later, we wouldn’t be here.”<\/p>\n

The experience fundamentally reshaped how the brothers see the world, confronting them with life’s fragility and the speed at which everything can change.<\/p>\n

Having begun breakdancing as teenagers, the pair channelled that defining moment into art. Their show, Harmony Amidst Destruction, traces their journey growing up in Lebanon \u2013 navigating instability, brotherhood, ambition and survival \u2013 through a dynamic blend of dance, storytelling, music, video and sound design.<\/p>\n

“For us, ‘harmony’ was never something that came after the chaos, it existed inside it,” Roger said. “We grew up in Lebanon during years of instability. War would flare up, then quiet down, then return again. Even in the ‘calm’ periods, the financial system was fragile and uncertainty was normal. So, we didn’t learn to wait for peace. We had to create our own harmony within the instability. That harmony was our connection to each other as brothers, and our connection to art. Dance, music, movement, that was our outlet. It was what kept us sane growing up. It gave structure to our days when everything else felt unpredictable.”<\/p>\n

Roger, who moved to Brisbane a few years before his brother in 2022, said the 45-minute work is not a straightforward biography but an emotional landscape shaped by memory and contrast.<\/p>\n

“There are moments of humour and childhood innocence, moments of intensity and discipline and moments that sit in silence and reflection,” he said. “Smooth, fluid movement represents safety and freedom, while rigid, sharp, and restricted movement reflects how trauma can make the body feel stuck or guarded. Rather than acting out events, we translate feelings into physical language, so the audience experiences the story instead of just hearing it.<\/p>\n

“The music is a unique blend of our cultural sounds and hip-hop. We use playback tracks created by Lebanese artist Beat La Lipos, who calls his style ‘808 Dabke’, combining traditional rhythms with modern beats. We also have live music: Greta Kelly performs beautiful violin and shah kaman passages.”<\/p>\n

Before creating the show, the brothers travelled extensively across Europe and the Middle East, competing in dance battles and immersing themselves in diverse styles and cultures.<\/p>\n

The project began last year through a development program at Brisbane Multicultural Arts Centre (BEMAC), which supports local artists by helping them refine their work and connect with venues.<\/p>\n

“We did our first performance there, and it gave us the foundation and confidence to dream bigger,” Roger said. “After that, we applied for a grant with Arts Queensland and were fortunate to receive it. That support allowed us to further develop Harmony Amidst Destruction, evolve the production, and bring it to multiple venues and locations as a full tour. We would love to continue touring and share the show with audiences all across Australia.”<\/p>\n

Now, they are preparing to bring the performance to Byron Bay.<\/p>\n

“The town has such a vibrant, creative energy and we feel it’s a place where people are open to new experiences,” Roger said. “The show speaks to something universal. We’ve all faced setbacks and hard times. Anyone who has lost something, is rebuilding, or has been shaped by circumstances beyond their control will resonate with the story. It’s about survival, connection, and finding your own sense of harmony amidst challenges, and we hope audiences leave feeling inspired.”<\/p>\n
