ROLLER derby will take centre stage as the Northern Rivers Revolt brings two days of high-octane action to the Cavanbah Centre in Byron Bay on March 21-22.<\/p>\n

The tournament, now in its sixth year, features clubs from across Australia and is hosted by Northern Rivers Roller Derby in partnership with the Tweed Valley Rollers.<\/p>\n

Geelong will return to defend its title, while a combined Northern Rivers and Tweed team is tipped as one to watch.<\/p>\n

The competition promises fast-paced, full-contact action as skaters battle it out on skates around a flat, indoor oval track.<\/p>\n

Roller derby is contested in bouts with two opposing teams, each fielding blockers and a jammer.<\/p>\n

Points are scored when the jammer laps members of the opposing team, blending speed, strategy and skill.<\/p>\n

The sport is often described as a cross between American football and chess, requiring years of practice and tactical thinking.<\/p>\n

The event is sanctioned by Skate NSW, the peak body for skate sports in New South Wales.<\/p>\n

“Roller derby continues to be a dynamic and inclusive sport that complements the broader skating community in NSW,” a spokesperson from Skate NSW said.<\/p>\n

“With over 89 leagues active across Australia, events like Northern Rivers Revolt remain vital for sustaining competitive play and community engagement at the grassroots level.”<\/p>\n

The tournament also has a strong community focus, raising vital funds for the Fletcher Street Cottage, which provides support for the homeless and women in need.<\/p>\n

Clubs are actively recruiting new players, hosting open training sessions at the Cavanbah Centre and Rollerworld in Lismore on Friday nights.<\/p>\n

No skating experience is necessary.<\/p>\n
