AFTER performing alongside his longtime collaborative partner Rob Hirst at Bluesfest more than a dozen times over the years, taking to the stage there without him for the first time won’t be easy for Dom Turner.<\/p>\n

The Backsliders’ lead singer, songwriter and guitarist lost Hirst, who was also a founding member of Midnight Oil, when he passed away in January.<\/p>\n

“It will be very, very difficult but thankfully we are making it a celebration,” Turner said. “We’re going to have two drummers, because one is not enough to fill his shoes. What he did on one drum kit is almost impossible for any other person. We’re going to have some friends help out. I got the idea because this gig is a festival and so many friends of the band and friends of Rob are playing there I thought it was an opportunity to have a lot of surprise guests helping us through. Rob’s family will be there as well.”<\/p>\n

The pair met in the 1990s after Hirst saw Turner perform and asked him to do some session work with his side project band The Ghostwriters, and from that their songwriting partnership was born.<\/p>\n

“We became friends immediately and realised we had a very strong musical synergy, so we started really informally,” Turner said. “I’d go to his place or he’d come to my place and we’d workshop ideas.”<\/p>\n

The Backsliders formed in 1986 after Turner travelled to the US and returned inspired by the bands he saw there.<\/p>\n

“I wanted to do something that was representative of the early blues forms, so I put together the band then,” he said.<\/p>\n

“What we do is like a hybrid because we’re not from America; we’re not tradition-bearing musicians. We add in other elements to make it a bit different. If I’m doing an early blues song I will change the words to set the regions in Australia, for example.”<\/p>\n

When the original Backsliders percussionist left in 2000, Hirst put his hand up immediately.<\/p>\n

“We used to write the music a lot through improvising,” Turner said. “We’d just get together in a room and start making noise and all these riffs and grooves came out. The lyrics vary a lot. It could be something you overheard that you think is an interesting line, or something that directly affected your life, like somebody passing away, a joyous event, travel. I have a tendency to bang on about social justice in songs.”<\/p>\n

Hirst’s last performance with The Backsliders with a full drum kit was at Bluesfest in 2023. It was soon after that he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, which turned out to be inoperable.<\/p>\n

“That meant chemotherapy and radiotherapy, which affected him physically,” Turner said. “He didn’t play for about a year, although we were still writing songs on occasion. Then we changed the format and Rob was playing guitar and a stepped-down drum kit.”<\/p>\n

They played a few gigs last year, with their final performance together at the Wingham Music Festival in November.<\/p>\n

“Rob hated cancelling gigs with a passion,” Turner said. “He loved doing them and didn’t want to let people down. It was very much, ‘the show must go on’ with Rob. It was a fantastic ride that we had.”<\/p>\n
