WHEN most people first encounter freeskating, the reactions are often as entertaining as the riding itself.<\/p>\n

“Over the years, the comments have been priceless,” Murwillumbah freeskater Zachariah Bowers said.<\/p>\n

“My favourite one is when it’s assumed I have magnets implanted in my feet.”<\/p>\n

Actually, the freeskates design is disarmingly simple: two separate wheeled platforms topped with grip tape.<\/p>\n

But it is what they allow the rider to do on them, sliding around with both feet moving independently yet in calm unison, that makes it look so otherworldly.<\/p>\n

If skateboarding is considered a subculture, then freeskating sits deep underground.<\/p>\n

Typically described as a fusion of skateboarding and rollerblading, the concept dates back to the early 2000s, when downhill longboarder Ryan Farrelly set out to eliminate ‘speed wobbles’ by creating a new type of skateboard.<\/p>\n

After extensive experimentation, Farrelly replaced the conventional single board with two separate structures, unlocking the figure of eight motion that would later define freeskates.<\/p>\n

Momentum built in 2015 when a group of American, German and Japanese free-skaters launched JMKride, a community focused brand that used social media to help grow the sport’s global footprint.<\/p>\n

The only Australian to be sponsored by JMKride, Bowers says he hopes to grow freeskating as a sport on a local level.<\/p>\n

“My simple goal is to build off of JMKride’s work,” Bowers said.<\/p>\n

“I just skate and have fun.”<\/p>\n

“I’m not stressed about what the future holds. My riches aren’t on earth.”<\/p>\n

Longer term, Bowers dreams of establishing a dedicated crew of local freeskaters or even opening a skate shop style caf\u00e9 in his hometown, but he acknowledges that the scene in northern New South Wales remains small.<\/p>\n

“There are a few riders scattered throughout the Gold Coast and Byron Bay, but no one taking it very seriously as a preferred sport and art form,” he said.<\/p>\n

Bowers admits that something as unique as freeskating will inevitably be met with some criticism.<\/p>\n

“I’ve heard of freeskaters from other parts of the world receiving negative comments from skateboarders who dis them as being a gimmick and not practical,” he said.<\/p>\n

“That’s just human nature, to make false assumptions, and to mock what you don’t fully understand.”<\/p>\n

Despite all this, Bowers insists that it is “all love on the Tweed,” with most onlookers reacting in disbelief to the bizarre and alien mechanics of the freeskates at work.<\/p>\n

“Sometimes it’s met with awe, sometimes it’s confusion, often it’s both,” Bowers said.<\/p>\n

He says the reactions of older community members are particularly special.<\/p>\n

“I remember one old guy watching me skate and he told me, ‘I’d split myself in half if I tried that,'” Bowers said with a laugh.<\/p>\n

The most challenging part of freeskating for beginners, says Bowers, is learning how to gain momentum.<\/p>\n

“It’s easier than a unicycle to say the least,” he said.<\/p>\n

Bowers first started moving his freeskating career forward in late 2019, when recovering from a shoulder injury, he began engaging deeply with the global freeskating community online.<\/p>\n

“I was especially inspired by the street-style riders from China, who were flipping the skates, sliding grinds and tackling stair sets,” he said.<\/p>\n

“From there I began to understand how to manoeuvre my skates.”<\/p>\n

Operating in uncharted territory is one of the biggest thrills Bowers gains from this unknown riding genre, and with the road yet unpaved, he says he is free to experiment with his own tricks.<\/p>\n

“It is so uniquely fluid and mind-bending,” he said.<\/p>\n

“Just like Bob Ross found the joy of painting, I found the joy of freeskating.”<\/p>\n

He compares this spirit of newfound exploration to what the original skateboarders must have been feeling back in the early nineties.<\/p>\n

“I just fell in love discovering the endless possibilities within these two skates,” he said.<\/p>\n

Despite ongoing setbacks, including repeated shoulder dislocations and struggles with personal issues, Bowers has remained committed to his freeskates, with JMKride coming on board to sponsor the Murwillumbah rider in 2021.<\/p>\n

“I’m grateful for their patience throughout my journey of metanoia, finding the purpose of life and all that,” he said.<\/p>\n

Bowers will continue to keep the freeskates flame burning in the Northern Rivers and says he is willing to teach anyone who wants to learn.<\/p>\n

“If anyone sees me around town and wants to try it out, I’m down to teach and lend a pair of skates,” he said.<\/p>\n
