LIQUIDATORS have <\/span>been <\/span>appointed <\/span>to <\/span>Bluesfest <\/span>Byron <\/span>Bay <\/span><\/a>after <\/span>organisers <\/span>confirmed <\/span>the cancellation of the <\/span>2026 <\/span>event,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>leaving <\/span>thousands <\/span>of <\/span>ticket <\/span>holders <\/span>uncertain <\/span>about <\/span>whether <\/span>they <\/span>will <\/span>recover <\/span>their <\/span>money.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ticket <\/span>holders <\/span>are <\/span>generally <\/span>treated <\/span>as <\/span>unsecured <\/span>creditors <\/span>when <\/span>an <\/span>event <\/span>company <\/span>enters <\/span>liquidation, <\/span>placing <\/span>them <\/span>behind <\/span>banks, <\/span>employees <\/span>and <\/span>other <\/span>secured <\/span>debts <\/span>in <\/span>the <\/span>repayment <\/span>order.<\/span><\/p>\n

As <\/span>a <\/span>result, <\/span>refunds <\/span>often <\/span>depend <\/span>on <\/span>whether <\/span>funds <\/span>remain <\/span>after <\/span>higher <\/span>priority <\/span>obligations <\/span>are <\/span>met, <\/span>meaning <\/span>many <\/span>customers <\/span>receive <\/span>only <\/span>partial <\/span>repayments <\/span>or <\/span>none <\/span>at <\/span>all.<\/span><\/p>\n

Affected <\/span>customers <\/span>are advised to <\/span>consider <\/span>lodging <\/span>credit <\/span>card <\/span>chargebacks, <\/span>using <\/span>PayPal <\/span>dispute <\/span>resolution <\/span>processes <\/span>or <\/span>registering <\/span>claims <\/span>with <\/span>the <\/span>appointed <\/span>liquidator.<\/span><\/p>\n

The development was announced on Friday as organisers moved to address obligations to vendors, partners and ticket holders after the cancellation<\/a> of the long running music festival.<\/p>\n

Organisers said the decision not to proceed with the 2026 event followed extensive consideration of the operating environment for major live music events.<\/p>\n

They pointed to rising production, logistics, insurance and touring costs, along with softer ticket demand and international uncertainty.<\/p>\n

Festival director Peter Noble said the decision had been difficult given the festival\u2019s history and economic impact.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor more than three decades, Bluesfest has brought extraordinary artists and audiences together in Byron Bay while also driving significant tourism and economic activity for the Northern Rivers and New South Wales,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis makes the decision incredibly difficult. After careful consideration, we concluded we could not proceed in a way that would meet the standard our audiences, artists and partners expect.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ticket sales had softened in recent years as buying habits shifted, with more festivalgoers waiting until closer to events to commit amid cost-of-living pressures. Bluesfest is also among several major Australian festivals facing mounting insurance costs, higher artist fees and weather risks.<\/p>\n

The <\/span>festival <\/span>faced <\/span>backlash <\/span>this <\/span>year <\/span>after <\/span>organisers <\/span>promoted <\/span>the <\/span>2025 <\/span>event <\/span>as <\/span>the <\/span>final <\/span>Bluesfest <\/span>before <\/span>later <\/span>confirming <\/span>it <\/span>would <\/span>return <\/span>in <\/span>2026. <\/span>Leaked <\/span>artist <\/span><\/a>names<\/a>, <\/span>fake <\/span>posters <\/span>and <\/span>scam <\/span>social <\/span>media <\/span>pages <\/span>circulating <\/span>ahead <\/span>of <\/span>announcements <\/span>also <\/span>confused <\/span>some <\/span>ticket <\/span>buyers.<\/span><\/p>\n

The festival was previously cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19 restrictions before returning in 2022, when organisers reported strong late ticket sales.<\/p>\n

Organisers estimated the 2025 event generated about $65 million in indirect tourism spending for Byron Bay, $130 million across the Northern Rivers and around $230 million in economic activity across New South Wales.<\/p>\n

Ticket holders, including campers and parking pass customers, will be contacted directly by the appointed liquidator with information about how to submit claims and details of any potential refund arrangements.<\/p>\n

Further information for vendors, suppliers and partners will be communicated through the relevant financial administration process.<\/p>\n
