{"id":113923,"date":"2026-03-20T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-03-19T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballinatimes\/?p=113923"},"modified":"2026-03-19T00:55:22","modified_gmt":"2026-03-18T13:55:22","slug":"mount-st-patrick-college-marks-100-years-with-commemorative-book","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballinatimes\/news\/mount-st-patrick-college-marks-100-years-with-commemorative-book\/","title":{"rendered":"Mount St Patrick College marks 100 years with commemorative book"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MOUNT St Patrick College has launched a commemorative book marking 100 years of education, community and tradition.<\/p>\n<p>Staff, students and alumni gathered on March 14 for the launch of the publication, written by former principal Tony Daly as part of the college&#8217;s centenary celebrations.<\/p>\n<p>Titled Centenary, the history of Mount St Patrick College, the 368 page book documents the people, events and milestones that have shaped the school across a century.<\/p>\n<p>For Daly, launching the book on the site where the college first began added symbolic significance.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This year, more than any other, has encouraged the Mount St Patrick family to come together, to celebrate, to rekindle school day memories and to appreciate even more the history of the college,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Daly said he was motivated by a desire to strengthen the college community.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s important for people to know the school&#8217;s history because that shared knowledge brings them all together,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>The book features more than 400 photographs and historical images, including rare documents such as plans for the first high school building and municipal records from the 1930s.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_123469\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-123469\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-123469\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/03\/8Q2A4133_54701.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"487\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-123469\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">former principal Tony Daly with former Mt St Patrick student Sue Malone who features on the front cover of the centenary book. Photo: DAVID COPE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Personal memories from students who attended between the 1930s and 1960s are also included.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These personal accounts provide unique insight into school life that may not exist otherwise,&#8221; Daly said.<\/p>\n<p>The publication explores how the college evolved over decades, including the impact of World War II, the arrival of electricity and the introduction of physics and chemistry classes in the late 1950s.<\/p>\n<p>It also documents excursions, sporting achievements and annual traditions.<\/p>\n<p>The long standing influence of the Lismore Presentation Sisters, who founded the college alongside Sacred Heart Parish in 1926, is explored throughout the book.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Their faith, dedication and sacrifice during some of the most challenging times in the history of the college has left Mount St Patrick a strong Presentation foundation,&#8221; Daly said.<\/p>\n<p>Former student Darcy Twohill, who attended in the early 1940s, recalled strict supervision by the sisters.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They were certainly strict, and they used the cane a lot,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_123470\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-123470\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-123470\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/03\/8Q2A4119_55677.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-123470\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The publication titled Centenary, the history of Mount St. Patrick College has been released as part of the college\u2019s centenary celebrations, and documents the people, events and milestones that have shaped the school across a century. Photo: DAVID COPE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I would get hit plenty, for talking to other kids in the class, or for not being able to answer what they asked you.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I liked some of the teachers, but I hated some of them too.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Twohill said travelling to school each day involved an hour long horseback ride from his family&#8217;s Dulguigan property.<\/p>\n<p>He recalled students from outlying areas using what are now the sports grounds as a paddock for resting horses.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;d ride our horse to the priest&#8217;s garage and unsaddle them, and then let the horses wander,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Principal Gavin Dykes said the college&#8217;s identity has always been closely linked to the regional town of Murwillumbah.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The town has been an implicit part of this school and its culture for over 100 years,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As you go through the centenary book, there&#8217;s so many examples, whether it be fetes, productions or sporting events, that show how the school and the wider Murwillumbah community are enmeshed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_123471\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-123471\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-123471\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/03\/8Q2A4146_54134.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"424\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-123471\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Left: Former student Darcy Twohill, who attended Mount St Patrick College from 1940 to 1948, recalls riding six miles on horseback each day to get to school.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The history of the school is the history of Murwillumbah.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dykes said traditional country town values aligned naturally with the college&#8217;s ethos.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It fits Mt St Patt&#8217;s ethos wonderfully,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Those standards of profound respect, dignity, and treating others how you&#8217;d like to be treated, within the lens of a faith perspective, our kids live and breathe those values.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Former student and current teacher Milly Hay said attending the college created a strong sense of belonging.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s a real sense of being a paddies kid and you stay connected to that community,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Coming back to teach here, I&#8217;ve found that it&#8217;s just like it was when I left, which is really interesting.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s a commitment to a sense of who we are here, and a real sense of pride in it that I don&#8217;t think exists in many other schools.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MOUNT St Patrick College has launched a commemorative book marking 100 years of education, community and tradition.
