A BYRON seniors facilitator has been recognised for her contribution to older residents across the shire, receiving a 2026 NSW Local Seniors of the Year Award.<\/p>\n
Pippy Wardell was selected by Ballina MP Tamara Smith as one of two local recipients of the award, which recognises seniors who make significant contributions to their communities through volunteering, leadership and service.<\/p>\n
Wardell has been involved with Byron Community Centre since 2010 and has supported the centre\u2019s seniors programs since 2013.<\/p>\n
Her work has included organising events such as the annual Byron Seniors Festival celebration and running regular activities including chair yoga classes and social programs designed to help older residents stay active and connected.<\/p>\n
She said the recognition reflected the strength of the local seniors community.<\/p>\n
\u201cI feel extremely grateful to be part of such a wonderful group of seniors in the Byron Shire,\u201d Wardell said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe friendships, laughter and support that come from spending time together are so special. It means a lot to be recognised, but the real reward is seeing people connect with each other, stay active and have fun.\u201d<\/p>\n
Byron Community Centre general manager Michelle Heuer said Wardell had played a key role in supporting older residents.<\/p>\n
\u201cPippy has been an incredible advocate for our seniors and a driving force behind our seniors activities and events,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
The Byron Seniors Club meets regularly at the centre and offers free activities and social opportunities for older residents.<\/p>\n
