{"id":114167,"date":"2026-03-29T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-03-28T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballinatimes\/?p=114167"},"modified":"2026-03-25T23:21:34","modified_gmt":"2026-03-25T12:21:34","slug":"hornets-coach-hopes-juniors-lock-in-spots-for-coming-rugby-league-season","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballinatimes\/sport\/hornets-coach-hopes-juniors-lock-in-spots-for-coming-rugby-league-season\/","title":{"rendered":"Hornets coach hopes juniors lock in spots for coming rugby league season"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CUDGEN will turn to its junior ranks to fill key first grade spots after losing several starters ahead of the Northern Rivers Regional Rugby League season.<\/p>\n<p>The Hornets enter the competition following a minor premiership winning campaign in 2025 but with several changes to the squad.<\/p>\n<p>Coach Wayne Forbes is hopeful the side can again push deep into the finals.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve had a bit of turnover this year, we&#8217;ve probably lost about six quality starters from our top 17, so it&#8217;s hurt us a little bit,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But we&#8217;ve done some recruitment, which has been good, and we&#8217;ll certainly still be thereabouts. Once you make finals, anything can happen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There will be competition for spots and we always have young guys from within who we can bring up.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Cudgen were eliminated early in last season&#8217;s altered finals series after heavy rain forced the competition to reduce the schedule and remove the usual second chance for top ranked teams.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_123920\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-123920\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-123920\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/03\/509797322_1246282353_08638.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-123920\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hooker Chaz Bond showed plenty of ability out of dummy half last season. Photo: Cee Bee&#8217;s Photos.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Hornets lost just one regular season match before their semi final exit.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was a bit disappointing for the semi-final structure to change and for us to only get one crack at the title,&#8221; Forbes said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s not normally the case, but it was something the clubs voted on and we got the short end of the straw.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Star forward Caleb Ziebell returns this season, while hooker Tanu Nona, five eighth Elliott Speed, fullback Jett Forbes and second rower Ethan Schultz will come back from representative duties.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Caleb Ziebell is back with us, and he&#8217;s the sort of player that you build the side around,&#8221; Forbes said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve got a quality group again this year and we&#8217;re looking forward to getting out there and playing some footy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The season will begin on the weekend of 11 April.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CUDGEN will turn to its junior ranks to fill key first grade spots after losing several starters ahead of the Northern Rivers Regional Rugby League season.
