	{"id":114760,"date":"2026-04-26T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-04-25T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballinatimes\/?p=114760"},"modified":"2026-04-22T20:58:04","modified_gmt":"2026-04-22T10:58:04","slug":"swamp-beer-lives-on","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballinatimes\/news\/swamp-beer-lives-on\/","title":{"rendered":"Swamp beer lives on"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE 25th anniversary of Murwillumbah&#8217;s infamous &#8220;Swamp Beer&#8221; incident was marked over the Easter weekend, with a local artist revisiting the event through a restored artwork.<\/p>\n<p>On Easter weekend in 2001, a semi-trailer carrying 40,000 bottles of beer crashed into the river near Murwillumbah.<\/p>\n<p>In the chaos that followed, locals scoured the wreck, using whatever means necessary to retrieve the drinks from the river.<\/p>\n<p>The submerged drinks were dubbed Murbah Swamp Beer, with many bottles bearing the MSB mark of James Squire&#8217;s Malt Shovel Brewery.<\/p>\n<p>The incident briefly put the small agricultural town on the map and inspired the humorous documentary Murbah Swamp Beer, a finalist in the 2002 Tropfest Australia competition.<\/p>\n<p>Murwillumbah electrician Shawn Dorney, 41, who appeared in the film as a young member of the local rugby club, said it generated a degree of local fame.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Heaps of people from other surrounding towns would recognise the people off of the show,&#8221; Dorney said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think for our generation who were there, people still laugh about it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_124879\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-124879\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-124879\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/04\/IMG_2662_84236.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-124879\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Murwillumbah artist Nathan Knight, who lived through the Murbah Swamp Beer incident, created a piece he now hopes to adapt into beer-themed designs honouring the town\u2019s heritage. Photo: Supplied.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Local artist Nathan Knight said the story became the catalyst for his commemorative artwork, which captures both the humour and complexity of Murwillumbah&#8217;s identity.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I just wanted to create a picture that represents the antics of this bizarre historical event,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>A self-taught cartoonist, Knight&#8217;s creation is an eclectic mix of local icons, stories and broader influences from the time, all built around the Swamp Beer incident as the centrepiece.<\/p>\n<p>Knight has restored the piece to mark the quarter-century anniversary and plans to incorporate it into beer-themed designs.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My artwork is designed to be on beer cartons, festival posters and prints to make it forever iconic,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Knight said he began the artwork immediately after the weekend of the crash.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The whole weekend was hilarious, and I just sat down that night and got started on the artwork,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>He recalled driving into Murwillumbah as the aftermath unfolded.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A police officer I&#8217;d had a few run-ins with over the years was holding my car up to let traffic come through,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>After learning of the crash, Knight asked if he could salvage the beer once the truck was removed.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_124880\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-124880\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-124880\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/04\/bb358394-d412-46ba-a_02851.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"451\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-124880\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A self-taught cartoonist, Knight&#8217;s creation is an eclectic mix of local icons, stories and broader political influences from the time, all built around the Swamp Beer incident as the centrepiece. Photo: Supplied.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The officer smiled at me and said, &#8216;Well Nathan, from what we&#8217;re informed of at this stage, the beer is in no man&#8217;s land being in the river, and if you and your mates want to salvage it there&#8217;s basically no law that stops you&#8217;,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Knight said word quickly spread, escalating into a town-wide frenzy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People started grabbing trollies and heading straight over there,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For months onwards you couldn&#8217;t go anywhere without boot loads of ice, beers and drunken celebration!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Knight said the stories from that weekend remain unforgettable, including one friend who spent an entire night diving for a case of German beer.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My mate found a stash of German beer out deeper in the river and spent all night diving to get only the best, while my brother guarded the trolley on the banks, having badly cut his toe on broken glass whilst salvaging beer earlier,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Looking back, Knight said the Swamp Beer chaos remains a defining part of the town&#8217;s cultural heritage.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They lived hard and died young, but they were part of a moment that was so fitting in the unique history of the time and a legend that was built on blood, sweat and beers,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE 25th anniversary of Murwillumbah&#8217;s infamous &#8220;Swamp Beer&#8221; incident was marked over the Easter weekend, with a local artist revisiting the event through a restored artwork.
