{"id":115323,"date":"2026-05-14T16:02:59","date_gmt":"2026-05-14T06:02:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballinatimes\/news\/like-a-war-zone-eyewitness-recalls-heartbreaking-cattle-truck-fire-on-bruxner-highway\/"},"modified":"2026-05-14T17:53:50","modified_gmt":"2026-05-14T07:53:50","slug":"like-a-war-zone-eyewitness-recalls-heartbreaking-cattle-truck-fire-on-bruxner-highway","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballinatimes\/news\/like-a-war-zone-eyewitness-recalls-heartbreaking-cattle-truck-fire-on-bruxner-highway\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Like a war zone\u2019: Eyewitness recalls heartbreaking cattle truck fire on Bruxner Highway"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An eyewitness has described a \u201cwar zone\u201d scene after a cattle truck fire on the Bruxner Highway near Wollongbar killed multiple animals and brought traffic to a standstill.<\/p>\n<p>The fire broke out on the Bruxner Highway near Wollongbar about 11.55am on May 14, near the NSW Department of Primary Industries site, prompting an emergency response from Fire and Rescue NSW, police, Transport for NSW and heavy vehicle recovery crews.<\/p>\n<p>Eyewitness Adam Wijeyekoon, who was travelling through the area shortly after the truck initially pulled over, said the incident unfolded within minutes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI noticed a truck pulling over &#8230; and I could see plastic melting and dripping from the rear,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom a small sort of bonfire type thing in the corner, the next thing the whole back of the thing was going. It went so quick.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTyres were exploding off their rims &#8230; it was almost like a war zone, with big black smoke just going up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCars were coming through the other side and I was just thinking, it\u2019ll take someone out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?height=420&amp;href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Freel%2F1830315624594113%2F&amp;show_text=false&amp;width=560&amp;t=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"420\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Wijeyekoon said he pulled over to help manage traffic as the situation escalated, placing warning equipment on the roadway to alert approaching drivers.<\/p>\n<p>He said his immediate concern was the safety of the driver and the cattle on board.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHearing the cows bellowing in pain &#8230; it was just really heartbreaking,\u201d Wijeyekoon said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe driver did all he could, he jumped up to the top level to try and help the cattle that were up there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wijeyekoon said he believed the blaze may have originated in the truck\u2019s braking system.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it was a brake fire &#8230; sometimes truck brakes get locked on a little bit and it caught fire and then spread,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 619px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/32\/2026\/05\/cattle2_40052.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"619\" height=\"347\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The highway was closed as the cattle truck fire had to be contained. Photo: Adam Wijeyekoon.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Emergency services took control of the scene, moving bystanders back as the fire intensified and securing the surrounding area.<\/p>\n<p>Traffic diversions remained in place while crews worked to extinguish the blaze and clear the wreckage.<\/p>\n<p>Wijeyekoon said a brief downpour helped prevent the fire from spreading further.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf it wasn\u2019t for that, it would have been much worse,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The cause of the fire will be investigated.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An eyewitness has described a \u201cwar zone\u201d scene after a cattle truck fire on the Bruxner Highway near Wollongbar killed multiple animals and brought traffic to a standstill.
