	{"id":115465,"date":"2026-05-23T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-05-22T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballinatimes\/?p=115465"},"modified":"2026-05-20T20:21:19","modified_gmt":"2026-05-20T10:21:19","slug":"wastewater-report-exposes-regional-meth-divide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballinatimes\/news\/wastewater-report-exposes-regional-meth-divide\/","title":{"rendered":"Wastewater report exposes regional meth divide"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>METHAMPHETAMINE use remains significantly higher in regional Australia than in capital cities, with a Northern Rivers rehabilitation provider saying local support services are under increasing pressure.<\/p>\n<p>The latest report from the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission&#8217;s National Wastewater Drug Monitoring Program found regional communities continued to record significantly higher methamphetamine consumption per person than capital cities, with overall use reaching its highest levels since monitoring began in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>The findings come as local rehabilitation provider The Buttery says demand is becoming more complex and increasingly difficult to manage.<\/p>\n<p>The Buttery chief executive Leone Crayden said alcohol remained the most common substance seen by the service, followed by methamphetamine.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Overall, at The Buttery we are seeing alcohol followed by methamphetamine as our participants&#8217; most frequent substances of choice,&#8221; Crayden said.<\/p>\n<p>Crayden said the service was seeing increasingly complex presentations and high rates of co-occurring mental health conditions.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are seeing more issues with housing and homelessness, relationship breakdowns, mental health issues, physical health and medical concerns, financial difficulties, and legal issues,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>She said polysubstance use had also become increasingly common.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Complicating the picture is that polysubstance use is now the norm rather than the exception,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>The pressure was flowing through a system already under strain.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The current wait list for residential support is approximately three to four months,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_126065\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-126065\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-126065\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/05\/12_93536.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"315\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-126065\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The wastewater analysis found methamphetamine consumption had reached its highest levels since the monitoring program began in 2016, with both capital cities and regional areas exceeding previous annual averages. Photo: File.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Crayden said immediate access to treatment and aftercare support remained among the biggest gaps in the system.<\/p>\n<p>Drawing on analysis from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, Crayden said methamphetamine use was closely linked to mental health issues.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People who reported having been diagnosed with, or treated for, a mental illness in the previous 12 months were 3.9 times as likely to have used methamphetamine and amphetamine in the previous 12 months,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>But Crayden said the human story behind methamphetamine use was often misunderstood, particularly in regional communities.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Methamphetamine use in regional areas is highly stigmatised, but meth use occurs in a context which often involves socioeconomic disadvantage, trauma etc.,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It can be used as a way of coping with life.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I haven&#8217;t yet met anyone who has used, with the intention of becoming a meth user.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Crayden said focusing solely on the drug risked overlooking broader drivers of harm, including trauma, mental ill health, housing instability and poverty.<\/p>\n<p>She said stigma itself could become a barrier to treatment.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People tend not to seek treatment for meth use as there is so much discrimination and shame attached to using the drug,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In regional communities there are fewer treatment options, longer wait times, limited housing, transport barriers, and less access to mental health care.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Meth use can become more prevalent as there are fewer ways to step out of crisis once patterns escalate.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>METHAMPHETAMINE use remains significantly higher in regional Australia than in capital cities, with a Northern Rivers rehabilitation provider saying local support services are under increasing pressure.
