{"id":115603,"date":"2026-05-31T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-05-30T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballinatimes\/?p=115603"},"modified":"2026-05-27T19:02:08","modified_gmt":"2026-05-27T09:02:08","slug":"teenage-pilot-inspires-ballina-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballinatimes\/news\/teenage-pilot-inspires-ballina-students\/","title":{"rendered":"Teenage pilot inspires Ballina students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A TEENAGE\u00a0pilot who flew 42,000km around the world has urged Ballina students to pursue their passions after turning a battle with Crohn&#8217;s disease into a record breaking aviation journey.<\/p>\n<p>Byron Waller, 16, was the guest speaker at the Student Aviation Careers Expo and spoke to students at Ballina Coast High School as part of the NSW Educational Pathways program.<\/p>\n<p>Waller, who lives in Brisbane, became the youngest supported pilot to fly around the world in a light aircraft last year.<\/p>\n<p>The journey took him through Europe and North America before crossing the Pacific and returning home.<\/p>\n<p>He visited 19 countries in just over two months and spent up to 17 hours at a time inside the cramped cockpit.<\/p>\n<p>In 2024, he also became the youngest person to fly around Australia while managing the chronic inflammatory condition Crohn&#8217;s disease.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_126328\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-126328\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-126328\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/05\/IMG_8457_11157.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-126328\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Byron Waller hopes he can be an inspiration for young people by following his dreams as a pilot.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Waller said speaking with students and sharing his experience had become one of his biggest passions.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People coordinating the event reached out to us and they asked if we&#8217;d like to go down to Ballina and present to school kids and that&#8217;s a big passion of mine,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Telling young kids about the aviation industry and showing them where I&#8217;ve come from to where I am now is really exciting.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was really sick when I started and now I&#8217;m able to fly and show other people that they can fly as well.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The aviation expo introduced students to career opportunities in the aviation industry while giving them the chance to meet pilots and industry representatives.<\/p>\n<p>Waller said his own experiences had taught him the importance of finding purpose.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_126329\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-126329\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-126329\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/05\/J-A_BAC_ByronWaller__11932.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-126329\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The landing at Brisbane Airport when he became the youngest supported pilot to fly around the world in a light aircraft. Photo: Josh Woning \/Brisbane Airport.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s all about showing people that if they&#8217;re in health situations or other sorts of situations, that they can find a passion, they can find a dream,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And also, those people who just might feel a bit stuck in life \u2026 that they can explore a bit and find something they&#8217;re passionate about that they can put their mindset to and achieve.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The journey required months of planning and preparation, with route and weather considerations adding to the challenge.<\/p>\n<p>Waller said there were difficult moments along the way, but the experience left a lasting impression.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was pretty amazing being able to fly and see different parts of the world and experience different cultures,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It reminded me that a bunch of people can come together and help you achieve your dream.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s probably the big life milestone that I&#8217;ll tell my grandkids about.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A TEENAGE\u00a0pilot who flew 42,000km around the world has urged Ballina students to pursue their passions after turning a battle with Crohn&#8217;s disease into a record breaking aviation journey.
