A recent incident of illegal asbestos dumping at Eungella has again highlighted the ongoing risks and costs associated with hazardous waste disposal in the Tweed.<\/p>\n

Fire and Rescue NSW Station 391 Murwillumbah was alerted to the illegal dumping of asbestos at Eungella earlier this month.<\/p>\n

A crew from the station arrived and quickly isolated the contaminated materials and rendered them safe to be disposed of with the help of Fire and Rescue Tweed Heads HAZMAT and Tweed Shire Council.<\/p>\n

A Tweed Shire Council spokesperson said a comprehensive trend analysis of asbestos dumping in the Tweed has not yet been undertaken.<\/p>\n

“While local trends remain unconfirmed, factors such as increased development activity, population growth, and improved community awareness and reporting may influence the number of complaints received,” the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n

“At a state level, the NSW EPA has reported an overall reduction in illegal dumping incidents over recent years, although the issue remains widespread.”<\/p>\n

The spokesperson said illegally dumped asbestos is often found in discreet or low-visibility locations.<\/p>\n

“Operational experience suggests that illegally dumped asbestos is often found in discreet or low-visibility areas, such as roadside reserves, bushland, and lower-traffic rural roads, where there is reduced likelihood of detection,” they said.<\/p>\n

“This reflects opportunistic behaviour rather than a clear geographic pattern.”<\/p>\n

The spokesperson said the material poses serious health and environmental risks, particularly when disturbed.<\/p>\n

“Illegally dumped asbestos is often damaged, deteriorating, or improperly handled, which increases the risk of fibre release,” they said.<\/p>\n

“Both friable asbestos (loose and easily crumbled) and non-friable (bonded) asbestos (such as fibre cement sheeting) can become hazardous if broken, weathered, or disturbed.”<\/p>\n

The spokesperson said the council estimates illegal dumping costs the Tweed community about $200,000 per year, or around $1m over five years, with costs including “site assessment and hazard identification, engagement of licensed asbestos removal contractors, containment, transport and disposal at EPA-licensed facilities, waste levy and tipping fees for hazardous material, and staff time for investigation and compliance action.”<\/p>\n

The spokesperson said illegal asbestos dumping is a serious offence under NSW law, with penalties including on-the-spot fines of up to $4,000, court-imposed penalties of up to $250,000 for individuals, and up to $1m for corporations.<\/p>\n

The spokesperson added that council enforcement includes investigation, surveillance and regulatory action, including the use of cameras in known dumping areas to help identify offenders.<\/p>\n

“Improvements in surveillance technology are expected to strengthen enforcement capability moving forward,” they said.<\/p>\n
