{"id":116261,"date":"2026-07-04T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-07-03T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballinatimes\/?p=116261"},"modified":"2026-07-04T04:00:00","modified_gmt":"2026-07-03T18:00:00","slug":"celebrate-the-dalai-lamas-birthday-with-tibetan-monks-at-crystal-castle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballinatimes\/news\/celebrate-the-dalai-lamas-birthday-with-tibetan-monks-at-crystal-castle\/","title":{"rendered":"Celebrate the Dalai Lama&#8217;s birthday with Tibetan monks at Crystal Castle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>FOUR visiting Tibetan monks will perform a ceremony usually only found in Dharamsala or Nepal to mark the Dalai Lama&#8217;s 91st birthday at Crystal Castle and Shambhala Gardens on Monday 6 July.<\/p>\n<p>The public is invited to attend the Milestone Ceremony and Long Life Guru Puja, which will feature horns and cymbals, offerings laid out and overtone chanting.<\/p>\n<p>A Long Life Guru Puja is one of the most revered ceremonies in Tibetan Buddhism and is a formal offering of prayers for the long life and good health of a great teacher, in this case the Dalai Lama.<\/p>\n<p>The birthday celebrations coincide with the monks&#8217; longest-ever residency in Australia and the closing of the globally recognised &#8216;Year of Compassion&#8217;, a once-declared year-long observance that will never recur.<\/p>\n<p>Crystal Castle general manager Toby King said it was a rare opportunity to see such a special and visually rich ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/07\/Gyotomonkschantsofco_18927_tn_w600-6.jpg\" alt=\"Visitors have the opportunity to meet the Tibetan monks. Photo: Crystal Castle.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a real ceremony, not simply a show and the public is welcome to witness and be a part of it rather than just watch from a distance,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>The Gyuto monks are in Australia on their longest-ever residency and will present a daily program of meditation, chanting and art classes until 30 August.<\/p>\n<p>The will also lead talks on Buddhism, conduct traditional ceremonies and create three sacred mandalas, painstakingly crafted grain by grain over several weeks.<\/p>\n<p>All sessions are included with general admission to Crystal Castle, with no additional ticket required.<\/p>\n<p>The Gyuto Monks have shared a connection with the Montecollum attraction in the Byron Bay hinterland for more than three decades.<\/p>\n<p>That relationship began when they guided the construction and blessing of the Kalachakra World Peace Stupa, which officially opened in 2012 and was also blessed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama. The stupa is the only Buddhist monument of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/07\/AGyutomonkmakingasan_20835_tn_w600-6.jpg\" alt=\"A Gyuto monk creating a sand mandala at Crystal Castle. Photo: Crystal Castle.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The monks returned to celebrate the stupa&#8217;s third anniversary before undertaking a rare month-long residency last October. Following the success of that visit, they returned late last month.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When they&#8217;re here, the whole place shifts,&#8221; King said. &#8220;Guests feel it the moment they walk in and to have them in residence for nearly three months, creating three sacred mandalas, is something truly wonderful.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Gyuto monks are masters of overtone chanting, where each monk sounds three notes simultaneously, a low, resonant chord found almost nowhere else on earth, it&#8217;s incredibly special to see and they will be chanting daily in our Peace Dome.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Led by senior monk Lama Phurba on his first visit to Australia, the group comes from the Gyuto Tantric University of the Gelug tradition, which was founded in 1474 and is one of the most revered monastic institutions in Tibetan Buddhism.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>FOUR visiting Tibetan monks will perform a ceremony usually only found in Dharamsala or Nepal to mark the Dalai Lama&#8217;s 91st birthday at Crystal Castle and Shambhala Gardens on Monday 6 July.
