	{"id":116455,"date":"2026-07-16T13:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-07-16T03:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballinatimes\/?p=116455"},"modified":"2026-07-16T13:00:00","modified_gmt":"2026-07-16T03:00:00","slug":"preschoolers-embrace-culture-and-country","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballinatimes\/news\/preschoolers-embrace-culture-and-country\/","title":{"rendered":"Preschoolers embrace culture and Country"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TWEED Heads South Public preschool students have celebrated NAIDOC Week by learning songs in local Aboriginal languages and taking part in cultural activities with elders and community members.<\/p>\n<p>The preschool students joined the whole school assembly on Wednesday 1 July, where Aunty Maureen Logan spoke about this year&#8217;s theme, 50 Years of Deadly.<\/p>\n<p>The preschoolers performed two songs \u2013 Inanay, accompanied by clap sticks, and Taba Naba.<\/p>\n<p>The young students also took part in a range of cultural activities alongside their school peers, run by local elders and community members.<\/p>\n<p>Activities included traditional weaving with artist Kyra Togo, contributing to a whole-school artwork with Aunty Sherrie, and making Johnny cakes with Aunty Beanie Duroux.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2026\/07\/Amiah-Khileah-Rosepr_18040.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"419\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Preschoolers participated in a variety of activities during the NAIDOC Week celebrations. Photo: supplied by NSW Department of Education.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Principal Kirstin Beck said there was a &#8220;real buzz around the school&#8221;, with preschoolers eager to develop new skills and contribute to the canvas artwork.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Preschoolers are naturally curious and interested in learning about and sharing their own family culture and other students&#8217; and this learning is embedded in everyday practice to strengthen identity and strengthens relationships,&#8221; Beck said.<\/p>\n<p>Of the 38 preschool students, 15 identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.<\/p>\n<p>Beck said learning from elders and community members was an important part of helping students understand culture and community.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our preschool students have Bundjalung language lessons with our language tutor, as well as learning songs in language,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When they learn from elders and community members, they hear real stories and experiences, which helps them develop respect for others and build strong relationships.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s about teaching them to work together, understand what has come before, and celebrate the richness and diversity of our community.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The preschool students regularly take part in activities alongside their school peers, including the athletics carnival, weekly library visits and using the school playground.<\/p>\n<p>Beck added that this integration helps to create a smoother transition into formal schooling.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It helps bridge the gap between early learning and formal schooling for students,&#8221; Beck said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The aim of transition activities is to build resilience, independence, and social confidence.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A positive start to primary school will support students&#8217; long-term academic and social success.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Tweed Heads South Public offers a range of learning opportunities including high potential and gifted education programs such as STEM learning, concerts and creative arts, dance groups, choir and sporting teams.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>TWEED Heads South Public preschool students have celebrated NAIDOC Week by learning songs in local Aboriginal languages and taking part in cultural activities with elders and community members.
