No horsing around at Tuckers

In November, Tuckers Funeral and Bereavement Service provided the opportunity for several aged care homes to engage in horse therapy.

Two horses and their handlers entered their courtyards and for many who were unable to go outside, one of the horses, Horace, went to them.

Imagine how it would feel to be sitting in a loungeroom or bedroom watching TV only to hear a knock on the door and to be greeted by a horse

Tuckers staff will never forget Horace and his handler Ben who meandered through hallways knocking on doors, asking each resident “Did you order this last night?”, to be answered with a “no” where Ben would reply “Well, what are you going to do about this, then?”

There was laughter, love and joy wherever the horses went as those on site watched the incredible relationship man can have with a horse and a horse with man.

The animals seemed to read the play, allowing residents to connect with them on the resident’s terms, always open for a pat, a scratch, a chat and a carrot.

There is a quote stating that as humans tamed and domesticated these wild horses, horses would become more closely entwined with humans as companions. They would trust and rely on us the same way they would their herd in the wild.

Everyone involved in the day felt and saw this.

It was moving to see residents who once had horses reconnect again, the presence of the animal lighting up memories which had perhaps been momentarily forgotten.

One resident who didn’t often participate in social activities, joined in, was present and engaged with Horace – the look of joy and engagement with the animal was moving and memorable.
