A video game world you wish was real

April 27, 2018 BY

Log into the latest film from Steven Spielberg which is also based on Ernest Cline’s book of the same name.

Ready Player One is set in 2045, a time when the world has become desolate and pretty much unappealing. However, there is an escape: the OASIS. A virtual reality game where anyone can be whoever they want to be.

One gamer named Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan), becomes embroiled in a particularly high stakes game within the OASIS: one with the whole fate of the OASIS hanging in the balance.

The world of Ready Player One truly is a wonder to behold. Starting with one of the most insane car chases I have ever seen, the visual effects never slip up, creating a video game world you wish was real.

Now, some movies have the odd reference to pop culture here and there to crack a smile from the audience.

Ready Player One has references everywhere! Every scene there seems to be another callback to an 80s movie or videogame.

While this is entertaining most of the time, if you’re not religiously well-versed in 80s pop culture, some stuff will inevitably go over your head.

The biggest complaint I have is in regards to the characters.

In some cases, they are pretty smart, solving cryptic clues to help them win the game. At other moments though, they come off as dumb, their actions seeming like contrived convenience simply to move the plot along.

Overall, Ready Player One felt like a unique and original movie. It had its problems and a few dumb moments, but it was a fun time that presents you with a fictional world that you’re unlikely to see in most other films.
