Ambience and atmosphere
Living and working at Point Lonsdale, Darin Frankpitt takes inspiration from the natural environment, seascapes, woodlands, the reflection of light off clouds and objects.
Ambiance and atmosphere are important to Frankpitt’s work, which reflects a wild, sometimes dark, mystical world hidden behind a veil others often don’t see, or wish to explore.
Frankpitt first started painting sitting next to his dad, both painting scenes from the campsite during summer holidays. This led to Art studies at RMIT and the University of Hobart.
He also taught art throughout Melbourne and the Bellarine. He presently is operating his own business, Cobalt Painting Services, with a focus on trade painting and private commissions.
As a tonalist painter, Frankpitt draws influence from French and Australian Impressionist painters. He begins his artworks painting or sketching on site in the tradition of en plein air painting, preferring to use sketches back in the studio.
Recently photography is also being used in combination with other found images as Frankpitt becomes more experimental in his approach to making art.
“A new inspiration is to paint murals and I am finding myself moving away from my traditional compositions and processes to an experimental phase, where many elements of surrealism are finding their way into the painting action.”
Frankpitt is brave and honest in his exploration of his emotions and feelings. These stories are coming from his life experience and are reflected in the ambiance and atmosphere of his work.
“I want my work to tell a story that people can relate to in their own way,” he said.
“However, the metaphors I am using – for example, a distant ship on a horizon – is a detail about my life that deals with a sense of loss.”
