Recognition of regional artists is part of the strength and charm of the Hive Gallery and a considered part of their defining ethos.

“There is a wonder in discovering talented regional artists, tucked away in the countryside, staying true to their simpler lifestyle choices, curator Karen Spreadborough said.

Larissa Gray will exhibit ‘lost wax’ exploring fleeting moments.

“There is also a challenge of course, in supporting those very artists when, without the population density and arts buzz of the cities, it is harder to be seen.”

Building the presence of the present artists and freshening the offering with new talent to the gallery in October is the aim of the annual sculpture exhibition that showcases a diversity of works from five sculptors.

The annual sculpture competition will showcase works from five sculptors.

Configuration sees the return of Melbourne’s awarded Beatrice Magalotti, then looks at regional inspiration with new works from regulars Bruce Webb of Mornington, and George Lianos of Malmsbury.

Excitingly, Olinda based Aukje Van Vark debuts with four bronze works, in part slotting right into the natural themes that abound in the gallery, but also linking to the historical, imaginative, and mythological creatures that are seen in Magalotti’s work, all deep in concept yet with a sense of play.

The exhibition build the presence of current artists and refreshes what’s already on offer.

What’s more, hailing from Kyneton – a strong centre for the arts – Larissa Gray exhibits her unique “lost wax” bronze whimsical designs with stunning, specialised patinas that explore “fleeting moments when I feel a sense of awe at the beauty in the world,” Gray said.

Configuration, runs October 4 until 27, Opening 2pm on Saturday October 5 at 41 Smithton Grove, Ocean Grove.
