Callum to play pipes at Cowrie Market
Bagpipes are back at the Torquay Cowrie Market this January with an ambitious, genre-spanning musical project created by acclaimed Surf Coast composer and performer Callum Watson.
Taking the stage at 12.20pm with local Surf Coast musicians Carlo Muncey and Michael Cordner from local rock band Flawed Peace, and Angus Sumner from Crooked Space, Callum Watson believes their set will be an engaging performance the audience will enjoy.
“The pipes will be moving through the audience as we play,” Callum said.
“The crowd can expect classic hits with modern twists, as there are only eight notes the bagpipes can play. We’ll play some of my arrangements of songs from the rock, classical and Celtic repertoires as well as my own compositions.
“We’ll also be playing pipes alongside Alex Fraser from the Geelong RSL Pipes and Drums group.”
Callum began playing the bagpipes when he was 13, taking up the instruments because of his ancestral Scottish background.
“I’ve been listening to a lot of ACDC and John Farnham lately, so this is what our performance will be inspired by, along with my passion for the pipes.”
The Cowrie Market operates on the 3rd Sunday of every month, featuring locally grown produce, homemade products, art and music.
Torquay Cowrie Market is located along the Torquay Esplanade, running from 10am-3pm on Sunday January 21. Visit the Facebook page at Torquay Cowrie Market or surfcoastarts.com/torquay-cowrie-market.
Callum Watson’s performance will be on the North Stage at 12.20pm for an hour set.
