Cocktails to die for

Barry Iddles puts a unique twist on the traditional Bloody Mary.

A BELLARINE chef’s frightening concoctions will feature in a magazine dedicated to Halloween lovers.

Hallozween is the first magazine of its kind in Australia. It is filled with practical ideas to help people make October 31 a special day of spooks.

Hallozween co-founders Andrea Beattie and Cathy Anderson approached Barry Iddles, the owner of Queenscliff-based restaurant 360Q, for Halloween themed cocktail ideas.

Mr Iddles said it was a  project that suited him, and let his creativity run free by creating six ghoulish recipes to feature in the magazine.

“My brains a bit off-centre, so I can come up with anything,” Mr Iddles said.

“With one of them I put Bloody Marys in a syringe and petri dish and then had lychees dipped in red colour so they looked like bloodshot eyeballs, with a blueberry for garnish.

“Then I did ‘A Zombie’ with some fairy floss, which was quirky. If you drank ‘A Zombie’ you’d certainly be a zombie but it’s quite good.”

The magazine also features a comprehensive buyers’ guide for home decorations, spooky recipes and baking tips, home and yard decorating tips, movies and board games for the whole family, classic costume and makeup ideas, DIY craft ideas, Jack o’lantern carving tips and stencils, and more.

Ms Beattie said the magazine ideas will help people enjoy Halloween despite the pandemic.

“We might not be able to trick or treat or gather at events as we have done on previous Halloweens, but there’s no reason Australians can’t keep their ‘spirits’ up.”
