Corangamite seniors have a voice
A new, free support network is now available to stand up for the rights older people in need in Corangamite.
Corangamite federal member Sarah Henderson encouraged locals to use the newly established network.
“The Turnbull Government understands that, from time to time, older people, their families and carers need help to navigate their legal and aged care rights,” Ms Henderson said.
“I meet local senior residents every day and I know how vulnerable they can be. That is why the new Older Persons Advocacy Network will be of such benefit, by giving them a strong voice.”
Ms Henderson said the new service is easily accessed, through a website and a freecall number.
“Locals are automatically connected with our Victorian advocacy organisation,” she explained.
“Trained advocates then assess their needs and can provide a personalised service and meet with them if necessary. The aim is to ensure their rights are respected and that they can make informed decisions about their future.”
Ms Henderson said OPAN help was available to all Corangamite residents aged 55 and over, including those who may be living with a disability or dementia, or were from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
The Turnbull Government has provided $25.7 million over the next three years for OPAN to deliver the new National Aged Care Advocacy Program.
“This service is about respect for local seniors’ rights and individual needs and expectations,” Ms Henderson said.
Corangamite residents, their families or carers in need of advocacy should head to opan.com.au or phone 1800 700 600.
