Making meaning on Manus
Join Great Escape Books in Aireys Inlet for an evening with a difference. The book launch of Man Man – Making Meaning on Manus will be held this Friday with a photographic display of Man Man’s life and the art that sustained him on Manus Island. The story follows the remarkable friendship between Man and Jill Parris. The launch is a free event with refreshments, and all proceeds of the book sales going towards supporting refugees in detention. This is an AIRAR event. Life away from Sunshine
The Sunshine Boy – The Life of Leigh Bowery is an in-your-face exploration of a life lived a long way from suburban Sunshine, to be performed at the Potato Shed this Saturday at 8pm. Leigh Bowery was born March 1961 in the Melbourne working-class suburb of Sunshine. Moving to London in 1980, Bowery set about transforming himself through fashion and performance art. As a club promoter, he co-founded the legendary Taboo nightclub, using the venue as an outlet for his visionary performances. Leigh Bowery’s work is still referenced to this day in fashion and performance art, nearly 25 years after his death. Sunshine Boy features music from David Bowie; The Fall; The Cure; The Stranglers; Sonic Youth and Velvet Underground. Dropping the ball
A few of Torquay’s sporting clubs are teaming up again to present another free day of family entertainment to help raise money to improve their facilities. The “Tiger Drop”, organised by the Torquay football, cricket and netball clubs, will be held at Spring Creek Reserve. A golf flag will be set up in the middle of the oval and tickets will be sold for each of the 1,000 golf balls to be dropped from a helicopter hovering above the flag. The three closest balls to the flag will win the prizes of $15,000, $3,500 and $1,000 respectively. There will be live entertainment, jumping castles, children’s activities and more. Food stalls will be available and drinks will be at bar prices. The event will be held from 1pm-6pm.
