Hue and Cry Collective exhibits more than 300 works

THE Hue and Cry Collective is preparing for its biggest exhibition of the year, which opens this week.

Featuring more than 300 artworks, the annual art prize exhibition will open to the public tomorrow (Saturday, August 31).

The art prize was open to all mediums both 2D and 3D and from all levels of experience, with every entry exhibited.

Gallery owners Corey and Harriet Notaristefano are delivering the art prize for a second year, with the 2024 event featuring more works at a higher quality.

Harriet said the exhibition is a way of putting Geelong on the map.

“I think Geelong’s often forgotten when it comes to the creative side of things, so this is just a way of showcasing Geelong in all its glory,” she said.

The exhibition primarily features local artists, creating an environment where they can be seen by judges in the art world.

Entries will be in the running for high-value prizes including a $5000 cash prize for first place, decided by three judges.

Melbourne gallery owners James Makin and Bridget McDonnell will make up the judging panel with Geelong Gallery lead curator Lisa Sullivan, returning from last year.

“For us, having judges of that calibre is part of us showing our values as a gallery, that we can get those eyes on their works and hopefully that means more opportunities for Geelong artists,” Corey said.

Visitors will be able to cast their vote for the people’s choice award which will be announced on the final day of the exhibition. The winner will receive a three-week exhibition at the gallery.

The art prize also provides an opportunity for the gallery owners to discover new artists.

“Off the back of the art prize we contact lots of artists that we like the look of their works and where they’re heading in the direction and then offer them exhibitions as well,” Corey said.

Opening night will run from 7pm until 9pm. The exhibition will close on September 21.
