Hydrotherapy in Ocean Grove

Hydrotherapy sessions usually take place in shallow water and are a great option for rehabilitation

HAVE you heard of hydrotherapy? It describes many activities and exercises completed while in water, but with a targeted program by a physio. It’s a great option for rehabilitation and therapy.

Ocean Physiotherapy is proud to conduct regular individual and group hydrotherapy sessions here in Ocean Grove, and we are offering a free trial for anyone interested in trying our service.

Hydrotherapy sessions usually occur in shallow depths, allowing us to use water to its full advantage. With a tailored program and specially sourced equipment, you can move your body in ways that cannot be replicated with land-based activities. By combining select movements with the physical effects of water, such as resistance, drag and buoyancy, we can get the best therapeutic effect for your exercise, all while maintaining your comfort. We can enhance these effects for your therapy needs by changing speed and using special resistance devices, such as paddles, fins and floats. Water also provides a gentle pressure to submerged body parts, which can help with swelling and discomfort, while also helping body awareness and balance.

Programs are most effective when tailored to individual needs.

If you are already doing some hydrotherapy, or looking to get started, here are some tips to help get the most out of your sessions.

Arrive early. It means that you are not rushed, relaxes your body for therapeutic movements, and allows you to go to the toilet and have a shower before entering the water.

When you get into the water, start moving gently before increasing the range and speed of your movements. We suggest walking forward, backward and sideways for a few minutes each before moving on to more targeted segmental warm-ups.

Different principles and effects can be used in hydrotherapy to get the best effect.

Next, you want to be challenged at the right level by your exercises. We like to prescribe both exercises for functional movements and isolated body segments, with resistance and dosages tailored for you.

Lastly, ensure you have fun and allow others to have fun. You may move fast through the lanes and may splash water around, so be aware of your surroundings, and be courteous of others.

Moving and exercising in water can be a great way to manage pain, strengthen your body, improve your flexibility, and work towards your physical and functional goals.
