AWARD-winning director, producer and cinematographer Jack McCoy hit the road last week, celebrating the 20th anniversary of his Blue Horizon film, a tour that coincides with his latest achievement.

McCoy will be honoured in the 2025 Australian Surf Industry Association awards on Monday, May 5, as a Service to the Industry recipient.

The award recognises people who have made a significant and substantial contribution to the surf industry.

“It’s a massive honour to achieve this award, there’s only a handful of people who have received one.” McCoy said.

“Over a 50-year career I’ve done everything from being a shareholder in Quicksilver, making films for all the major filmmakers in the wild.

“The one thing I’m passionate about is being a surf environmental activist, supporting all the maker not-for-profit charities in Australia that have been fighting the fight for the Australia coastline.”

McCoy’s 2004 Blue Horizon film follows the story of Dave “Rasta” Rastovich and Andy Irons, both who chased a different path to surfing’s pinnacle.

Rasta escaped the spotlight, free surfing in search of the perfect wave across the globe, while Irons became a world-famous surfer, taking on the ASP world tour.

The film has won many awards across the two decades, including in 2004 when it took out Surfer Movie of the year and became one of the highest grossing films of all time.

As part of his celebration tour Rasta is joining McCoy on the road as the pair make their way around the country, including to Waurn Ponds with a showing on Friday, May 9 at Reading Cinema and at the Lorne Theatre on May 10.

McCoy will be doing a talk story presentation before the screening, featuring unseen footage and stories from throughout production, while a signing session and Q&A will take place afterwards.
