Jan Juc SLSC hosts footy finals fun
The Jan Juc Surf Lifesaving Club celebrated the footy season and made some money towards its coming clubhouse redevelopment at its annual grand final eve luncheon.
Held at the RACV Torquay Resort on Friday, the event – being staged for the fourth year in 2017 – was emceed by local media personality Mark Howard and featured a talented line-up of speakers.
These included Zeb Walsh and Cormach Evans talking about paddling their dug out canoe across the Torres Strait, comedian Andrew Startin, and a footy panel with Melbourne AFLW player and Geelong VFL captain Lily Mithen and local BFL great and Melbourne Demons development and strategy coach Brendan McCartney. Jan Juc SLSC’s Brad Papworth said AFL umpire Shaun Ryan would have been the third member of the panel had he not been selected to officiate in Saturday’s game between the Tigers and the Crows – luckily, just-retired Cats players Tom Lonergan and Andrew Mackie were found as replacements.
Mr Papworth said the event aimed to raise about $25,000 towards the redevelopment, which will break ground in February if all goes well, and “we’re going to go very close if not exceed that”.
