MELBOURNE rock band Jet is trading big stages for a pub room in Barwon Heads this May, with two shows locked in at the Barwon Heads Hotel.

The shows return the band to the kind of venues it first found an audience in.

Jet broke through in the early 2000s with debut album Get Born, driven by Are You Gonna Be My Girl. The track topped the Australian charts and gained traction internationally, later winning most performed Australian work overseas at the APRA Awards for three consecutive years. It also claimed the top spot in the triple j Hottest 100.

Follow-up records Shine On (2006) and Shaka Rock (2009) added to a catalogue that has remained a staple of Australian rock radio, with Shine On reaching platinum and She’s a Genius helping drive Shaka Rock into the Australian top five.

The band stepped away in 2012, regrouped in 2016, and in 2023 returned to mark 20 years of Get Born with a full-album tour. Later that year, they were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame.

Lead guitarist and vocalist Cam Muncey said the smaller rooms still feel like home.

“We are really looking forward to getting down there again and mixing it with the great crowds, great community and getting in their grill,” lead guitarist and vocalist Cam Muncey said.

“We came from that intimate setting; it was our bread and butter.

“That scene is everything we are about – psyching about rock on a grassroots level.”

The band rose to prominence in the early 2000s with breakout album Get Born.

Even now, two decades on, Muncey said the band is still finding new ground.

“It shows if you hang around and keep working at it, you get to feel and see new things,” he said.

“At the same time, we never forget where we came from, and we enjoy that feeling of being in the moment and caught in the chaos.”

Jet will play the Barwon Heads Hotel on 14 and 15 May.
