Reading the messages from students in the guest book at Kip McGrath Torquay, the same comments come through again and again – “I love Kip because it is fun… she makes learning fun… an amazing skill to make learning fun”.

Behind all the fun is a solid system of teaching: tutors who are dedicated, qualified teachers, and a business owner with decades of experience and a passion for teaching children.

Colleen Underwood was a primary and secondary teacher in Geelong before making the move to manage and own Kip McGrath centres in Melbourne.

Three years ago she opened Kip McGrath Torquay, and the centre on the corner of Zeally Bay Road and Cliff Street has gone from strength to strength.

“What sets us apart from other tutoring program is that each student has their own individual program,” Colleen said.

“In the centre the students work on their individually tailored program in small groups, supervised by one of our fantastic teachers.”

Colleen said the flexibility of doing onscreen lessons from home has been a huge growth area.

“Parents love that they can fit in their child’s tutoring with other after-school activities, but still have that live face-toface learning with a teacher.”

Tutoring is available every night and Saturday mornings in the centre or through the onscreen program.

Colleen is taking enrolments now for the popular summer school program “Bootcamp for Brains”, a fun learning program to keep students focused in preparation for the start of the new school year. Bootcamp for Brains runs January 7-18.

The last word, as always, goes to the students.

“One time when I was doing a group poster at school, one of the girls asked, ‘is it ie or ei?’ My brain went ‘bing’, ‘i before e except after c’ and everyone else said ‘oh yeah!’. I felt so smart just then and I thought ‘Thank you spelling rules and thank you Kip.” Ella, Year 7.
