Meadow makes a mark as environmental leader

MEADOW has taken centre stage as a local event that is planting a seed with patrons to foster a more sustainable future.

The Bambra music festival – to be held from March 31 to April 2 – continues to roll out initiatives to help protect the hinterland.

Meadow co-founder Cameron Wade highlighted the festival’s collaboration with sustainability social enterprise B-Alternative.

“B-Alternative helps organisations eradicate waste by offering sustainable alternatives like fully recyclable plates and crockery, no single-use food items, and separated recycling including an organics stream that generates compost from food waste,” he said.

“We’ll be taking full advantage of all the systems they offer to minimise Meadow’s impact on the environment.

“Meanwhile, all proceeds from festival car passes will continue to support the replanting of native trees and shrubs across the festival site and surrounding areas via East Otway Landcare.

We’re proud that hundreds of trees planted from 2020 onwards are starting to mature into regenerated bushy environments.

“We also take care to source as many of our service providers and facilities hirers from as close to the festival site as possible, to reduce travelling and transport impacts.”

Surf Coast Shire mayor Liz Pattison was pleased to see events such as Meadow aligning with the Surf Coast community vision: “we will leave the Surf Coast better than we found it”.

“I think every year we run Meadow, we are making a contribution to this vision,” Mr Wade said.

“With regard to sustainability initiatives, we’re always trying to do more and I think we are certainly leaving the Surf Coast a better place for the effort we make in this space.”

Meadow festivalgoers are encouraged to carpool or use a shuttle service, bring their own cups and refillable water bottles, and to pack-up well.

“I know everyone has seen videos of festival campsites littered with broken marquees and tents that never make it home – we’re not one of those,” Mr Wade said.

“At the conclusion of Meadow 2022, we left the festival site pristine and without a trace thanks to the punters.”

This year’s Meadow headliners include Philadelphia’s Kurt Vile & The Violators, and Australian folk-rock singer-songwriter Jen Cloher.

“Meadow is a standout on the autumn Surf Coast Events calendar which features another hinterland gem – the Deans Marsh Mini Fest (March 26) showcasing local creators, growers, and makers,” Cr Pattison said.

“April will begin with the stunning Surf Coast Wonderfalls Trail Run in Lorne, while the 60th anniversary of the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach will attract local and global audiences.
