Movie review: Extraction

Chris Hemsworth goes for some grittier action in this Netflix original movie.

In Extraction, Hemsworth plays Tyler Rake, an Australian mercenary who is hired to rescue 14-year-old Ovi Mahajan Jr. (Rudhraksh Jaiswal), the son of India’s biggest drug lord.
The rescue mission will not be easy, though, as Ovi’s kidnapper is Amir Asif (Priyanshu Painyuli) – the biggest drug lord in Bangladesh and rival to Ovi’s father – who’s determined to either ransom Ovi or kill him.
A heads up to anyone who is a fan of Hemsworth’s work in the Marvel movies; this film is a lot bloodier than any of those.
Characters get shot in the head and stabbed in the neck and the blood sprays can be sickening at times.
Within the first 10 minutes alone, we see a teenage boy get shot in the head. The number of children that get killed in this film is really disturbing.
Hemsworth is clearly in this movie because of status as a Hollywood star. His role honestly could have been played by any other actor with a penchant for action.
At least his character has the decency to look after teenage Ovi, especially when a majority of the characters keep trying to murder the poor boy.
Speaking of Ovi, despite being the son of a notorious criminal, he’s actually a pretty sweet kid whose ended up in a horrible situation all because of who his father is.
Ovi and Tyler also form some kind of bond that’s fairly nice to watch.
The action is pretty good, though there are times where it felt like I was watching a video game, though that might have had to do with the way it was shot.
If you are squeamish, I’d give Extraction a miss. You are not missing anything.
