Movie review: Sonic the Hedgehog

As the cinemas are still closed, I’ll be reviewing recent releases on DVD and streaming platforms. This week, it’s Sonic the Hedgehog.

Based on Sega’s gaming franchise, this movie follows Sonic (Ben Schwartz), an extra-terrestrial blue hedgehog with the power of super speed.
To avoid those who would steal his powers, Sonic hides on Earth, near the small town of Green Hills, Montana.
While safe from harm, the lonely little hedgehog can’t help but yearn for companionship.
But after an accidental power surge, Sonic becomes a target of the malicious Dr Robotnik (Jim Carrey).
The supersonic hedgehog must now turn to Green Hills’ sheriff, Tom Wachowski (James Mardsen), to help him evade the mad scientist.
This movie is what I would call silly yet fun.
The plot is rather simple, but it works pretty well, and the characters provide a solid amount of entertainment.
Ben Schwartz brings such personality to Sonic that you can’t help but love the little guy.
James Marsden was also entertaining as a secondary lead and the relationship his character formed with Sonic was adorable to watch.
On the villain’s side, Jim Carrey nailed the flamboyancy and maliciousness of Dr Robotnik. Though a goofy antagonist, he works for this story  and brings a good few laughs.
With only one or two exceptions, the special effects are decent and are especially great when it comes to Sonic and the portrayal of his super speed.
Movie adaptations of video games have been improving in quality over the years and Sonic the Hedgehog proves to be another step in a positive direction.
Admittedly, this movie won’t be for everyone, but if you are a fan of the Sonic franchise or you’d like something to entertain your kids, then Sonic the Hedgehog is a good film to pick out.
