Movie review: The Old Guard

Based on the graphic novel of the same name, Netflix brings us the story of a group of immortal mercenaries in The Old Guard.

Starring Charlize Theron as the group’s leader, Andromache of Scythia or “Andy,” the film follows the immortals in their efforts to use their unique abilities to help others in need.
Unfortunately, matters are complicated when a new immortal, Nile Freeman (KiKi Layne), is discovered and the group must help her adjust to her new undying life.
On top of all this, a greedy businessman (Harry Melling) has discovered the immortals’ secret and begins hunting them down with the goal of exploiting their immortality.
The feeling you get from this film is that immortality is more of a curse than a blessing.
All the immortals have suffered and lost people dear to them, with no choice but to keep on living.
Though they strive to do good, it is a struggle to continue when the world seems to be in constant chaos.
Thankfully, this movie is not all doom and gloom, ultimately showing the benefit that does come from the good deeds the immortals do.
Some levity is also added through the banter between the group.
It’s clear these characters care about one another, which helps you get invested in their well-being.
The Old Guard also boasts some well-directed and choreographed fight scenes, with Andy showcasing some of the film’s best.
It can get a little bloody at times, but, gratefully, nothing is ever too graphic.
Though the villains are primarily a generic evil corporation, they do their job at being despicable and easy to hate.
And, with the more complex protagonists, this winds up working in the movie’s favour.
Overall, The Old Guard is an enjoyable, action-packed film and among the best I’ve seen on Netflix.
