Music for lovers of the night at GPAC

February 13, 2018 BY

Both a delightful and heartbreaking musical, Tony Award winning A Little Night Magic arrives at GPAC on February 22.

Theatre lovers will be swept off their feet when A Little Night Music arrives at Geelong Performing Arts Centre this February.

Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler’s musical masterpiece is set in the Swedish countryside on a magical midsummer night.

A Little Night Music follows the farcical romantic adventures of an ageing actress, her ex-lover, his virgin bride, a sex-starved divinity student, a buffoonish count and his long-suffering wife.

Featuring a lush score including “A Weekend in the Country”, “Liaisons” and the ever-popular “Send In The Clowns”, A Little Night Music is a romantic tour de force.

Winner of four Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Book and Best Original Score, Sondheim’s glorious operatic farce premiered in 1973, based on Ingmar Bergman’s film Smiles of a Summer Night.

Nadine Garner, John O’May, Jackie Rees and Eddie Muliaumaseali’i lead a stellar ensemble cast as this delightful and at times, heartbreaking musical is reimagined by acclaimed Sondheim repertory company Watch This.

Director Nicholas Cannon loves the show due to its slightly odd collection of characters and the tension between their public faces and their more unruly, comfortable realities or desires.

“So although it’s set at the turn of the last century, there’s an immediate parallel with our own time and how we curate our lives for public consumption via social media,” Nicholas said.

“It’s also incredibly witty. Plus, I have an extraordinary line-up of Australian talent to work with: Nadine, John, Eddie, Jackie – it’s a gift.”

A Little Night Music begins the 2018 Deakin University Theatre Season at Geelong Performing Arts Centre, with four performances from February 22-24.

The nine-show theatre season includes new writing alongside the classics, produced by some of the best companies around Australia.
