Nominations open for senior awards

July 4, 2018 BY

Nominations for the Victorian Senior of the Year Awards close on July 20.

The Victorian Senior of the Year Awards celebrate older Victorians who support and inspire others through their
volunteer work, and this year’s nomination period is now open.

The annual awards honour the time, skills and support older Victorians have given to the community since turning 60.

They also recognise businesses that create age-friendly environments.

Award categories highlight the role of seniors as mentors, educators, role models, leaders and behind the scenes
workers.

Individual awards include:
• Premier’s Award for Victorian Senior of the Year
• Promotion of Multiculturalism Award
• Healthy and Active Living Award
• Veteran Community Award
• Victorian Senior Achiever Awards Winners from the Geelong region in the past three years include Barwon Heads’ Margaret Griffith (Council on the Ageing Senior Achievement Award, 2017), Highton’s Lynette Denbesten (Veteran Community Award, 2015), Warrnambool’s Kenneth Cumming (Council on the Ageing Senior Achievement Award, 2015) and Warrnambool’s Tim Carlton (Council on the Ageing Senior Achievement Award, 2016).

In recent years, older members of the Aboriginal community have been underrepresented
in the nomination process, and the awards are actively seeking nominations of Aboriginal Victorians aged 55 and older.

Nominations close on July 20, and each nominee will receive a certificate acknowledging their contribution.

Award recipients will be honoured at Government House at the 36th Victorian Seniors Festival in October.
