Osteos treat more than you think they do

May 2, 2019 BY

Osteopaths treat a wide range of issues from soft tissue injuries or aches, headaches, sprained joints (ankles, wrist) pregnancy-related pain, jaw pain, repetitive strains (such as tennis or golfer’s elbow), sciatica, hip pain, poor posture, as well as back and neck related problems.

Osteo awareness week was April 14-20 and gave us an opportunity to showcase how wonderful and amazing our profession is.

In case you missed it, or haven’t been enlightened to osteopathy, here’s an overview.

Osteopathy Australia states that “Osteopaths are allied health professionals that offer patientcentred approaches to healthcare and functional improvement that recognise the vital link between the structure of the body and the way it functions. Osteopaths focus on how the skeleton, joints, muscles, nerves, circulation, connective tissue and internal organs function as a holistic unit.”

In Australia, osteopaths are government-registered practitioners who complete minimum accredited university training in anatomy, physiology, pathology, general healthcare diagnosis, and osteopathic techniques.

There are 2,500 registered osteopaths in Australia, compared with 5,500 chiropractors, and 33,000 physiotherapists.

We treat more than you think! From soft tissue injuries or aches, headaches, sprained joints (ankles, wrist) pregnancy-related pain, jaw pain, repetitive strains (such as tennis or golfer’s elbow), sciatica, hip pain, poor posture, as well as back and neck related problems.

So if you’re suffering from a muscular skeletal ache, pain or injury – why not give osteo a go?

Dr Erin Coffey is an osteopath at the Health Creation Centre in Ocean Grove.
